Christine Isley-Farmer

Christine Isley-Farmer's first book in her series, "Boomer's Tales," features a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as the story's narrator. Christine loves this dog breed and has owned three Cavaliers. She encountered her first Cavalier, Fleur, while performing with the Harrisburg Opera. She was captivated by the big brown eyes and gentle, lively nature of the breed. Her present Cavalier, Dylan, likes to walk with her, chew on his favorite treat-stuffed Kong toy, and snuggle next to her in a recliner. Christine, a classically trained singer who has sung professionally in the United States and Europe, has also been a voice teacher. The stories in opera and song have fascinated and inspired her. The power of stories and music's healing qualities have woven their way through her life and have found voice in Finding My Yip.

Long Lost Elvis - Christine Isley-Farmer

    1.

    Elvis

Ifell asleep in my pet carrier after we headed home from Camp Resound. I woke up to Nana Weathers asking Chloe a question.

What did you enjoy most about Camp Resound?

I loved s-singing in the chorus and being around other kids who like music.

I’ll miss seeing Peanut every day and our adventures, I thought.

Glancing over at Chloe, Nana Weathers said, I don’t like driving in stormy weather at night.

I barked and Chloe screamed, Nana, w-w-watch out!

    THUD!

Nana Weathers drove Bluebird Thunder over to the side of the road. Opening the car door, she said, Chloe, I’ve pushed the trunk release. Please let Boomer out of his carrier and bring me the blankets in the trunk.

I leapt out of my carrier into a downpour. Chloe and I ran to the back of the car. There was another flash of light across the sky, followed by a clap of thunder.

Chloe and I ran to where Nana Weathers was kneeling next to whatever had made the noise when it hit our car.

Looking down, Chloe said, Nana, this looks like Mr. B-Brown’s donkey, Elvis. The kids were riding him at the school f-festival that raised m-money for Shannon and me to go to Camp Resound.

I think you’re right, Chloe. Pointing, Nana Weathers said, I believe Mr. Brown’s farm is over in this direction. She added, I wonder why Elvis would be out here on a night like this. Chloe, please get my phone from the car. I can use the flashlight to check for injuries.

Nana Weathers touched her magic ring when Chloe left to get the phone. The light from her ring swirled around Elvis. He lifted his head and grunted. It was a reminder of how her ring had saved me from becoming a hawk’s meal when I was a puppy.

When Chloe returned, Nana Weathers used the light from her phone to examine Elvis. He doesn’t look hurt, she said. There’re some small cuts on his left front and back legs, but he seems more stunned than injured.

Elvis raised his head, and looking at us, he opened his mouth. He showed us his big white teeth, like the keys on our piano.

    Haw-hee!

My goodness! That’s an unusual bray, Nana Weathers said. Let’s see if we can get him to stand up.

Nana, there’s some rope in the t-trunk too. I’ll get it. Maybe we can tie it around his neck to help him s-stand.

While Chloe ran back to the car, Nana Weathers rubbed her ring and made her whistle mouth. I had seen her do this before, so I knew something was about to happen. It was like the time she’d rescued my squirrel friend, Eldredge, from the top of a moving bus. The ring’s flash of light and the wind coming from her mouth were strong enough to get Elvis back on his feet.

Chloe, Nana Weathers shouted, Elvis is already standing, but bring the rope so he can’t wander off.

Nana Weathers put the rope around Elvis’s neck. She and Chloe walked him to the side of the road.

The rain began to let up. In the distance, lights came toward us. I barked, hoping to get the driver’s attention.

As the lights got nearer, Nana Weathers said, It looks like a truck.

The truck slowed and came to a stop. A man got out and came over to us.

Elvis, I’ve been looking everywhere for you! he said.

Mr. Brown, Chloe said, he ran out in f-front of us. We were driving home from C-Camp Resound.

He hit our bumper, which caused him to lose his balance, Nana Weathers explained. "Other than
