About this ebook

The taxi handbook says thou shall not get involved with your passengers; this is an object lesson for those who would stray from the rulebook. A handsome woman is not all she seems when the moon doesn’t shine. A simple family farm hides many secrets and encounters with the pig farmers can lead to challenges.

Things That Happen to a Taxi Driver - Kevin Colbran

    Changes to our lives

As Ellen would have reverted to wolf and wouldn’t be able to ring or communicate easily, I didn’t expect to hear much and wasn’t surprised when I only received a couple of typed letters over the next year. So it came as a great surprise when Bob arrived on my doorstep with a bundle comprising a baby boy and his clothes.

Sorry to surprise you this way, but here is your son we named Thomas. Ellen wants you to bring him up until he finishes school as she is not able to organise that from the farm, Bob said.

Is there any reason she wasn’t able to tell me? I asked somewhat taken aback.

When one of our women conceives she stays in whatever form it happens, Bob explained, Ellen has been a wolf for most of the last year; so until she weaned Tom she hasn't been able to be a woman.

That’s awkward, I have missed her, couldn’t you have least called? I asked somewhat bemused, I would have visited and kept her company.

I have had to carry the load of caring for them both; that took all of my time. Ellen wasn’t keen to tell you the news, Bob said and then gave instructions, If you could bring Tom home before every full moon so that he can keep in touch with his other family. Hell, this is going to take a lot of organising, I said then considered, Hang on we were together only seven months ago, and Tom looks at least, eight months old.

By human development, he would be closer to a year but it only takes two months to whelp and another few months take a pup to that stage, Bob said. We mature at double the human growth rate, and at about twelve years old he will be fully grown.

So when is the next time I need to visit? I asked the next question trying to make sense of the situation.

About three weeks, if you would, Bob suggested, Once a routine is established sooner the better.

Hang on a minute, does that mean he will only live to thirty or forty? That’s terrible, I said making a quick calculation which came up with a nasty result.

No, that’s not the case so don’t worry; Ellen and I are twins and only a few years younger than you, despite looking half the age. Once we mature our body clock gets reset a month each time we change and barring accident, have a very long life, Bob reassured me, "Which is just as well because 14 is considered a good age for a
