    Chapter 1

    Into Town

Hello, Oliver Possum here. Perhaps we’ve met on the road? I’m the one on the bicycle. In a brown cap? Yes, that would be me. I live about a mile out of town, and while that might be a long walk for a possum, it does make for an easy bicycle ride. I suppose that might be why you see so many bicycles these days; It’s easier than walking. Maybe a little too easy.

I find myself looking for reasons to go for a bike ride, and more often than not, that would mean a ride into the little village of Pudding. It’s not a big town, and it’s not that far away, but then, that’s the charm. I know everyone there, and they know me. And we all get along ... once I get there.

From home, it’s an easy ride for me over a mild hill, up over the top and down into the village. I have a comfortable bicycle with three gears, so with a simple click into low gear, I can pedal up the hill. Once I’m past the crossroads at the top of the hill, I give it two clicks up to high gear, fly down the other side, and I can feel the wind in my fur! I will never be the fastest animal on the path, but it is a lot of fun. I suppose that’s why bicycles are so popular these days.

My bicycle has a small wire basket on the front, and that basket, more often than not, gives me my excuse to go for a ride; I simply must go into town for something. I’ll know what when I get there. It isn’t a big basket, so I can’t carry much. And that makes me smile. I suppose I’ll have to come back for the rest of it another time. I’m always looking for a reason to ride. What I’m not looking for is a larger basket. This one suits me just fine. So does the bike.

Out of the house and down the lane, with my cap pulled down, I pedal toward Pudding. I know the way by heart. How many times? Too many to count. Sometimes once in the morning and again in the evening. Some days I stay all day, and some days I stay all night. The town is just far enough and never too far, an adventure every time.

    On your left, Possum.

Oh, I knew that voice. That was John Fox. I made sure I got over and gave John the road. Have you heard about the quick brown fox and the lazy dog? Yes, well, John is a red fox, and he’s even faster. And yet he stopped when I stopped, because that is what friends do when they meet out on the road. We stopped.

    Hello, John.

    Where are you going, Oliver?

    Into town.

John took a moment to scan the road ahead. The town was in sight.

Race you to the town sign!

    But you’ve already caught me.

Ah, but we weren’t racing. We were just riding.

    I thought I was racing.

    Oh.

But we could ride in together. It’s not that far.

We can do that. Lead on!

And so it was that John Fox and I rode into town together. Had you seen us do it, you might have thought it remarkable to see a possum and a fox riding their bicycles together, but it was not. We had done that before, many times. John was always catching me out on the road. It was never much of a race. He was the faster rider and had the faster bike. Even if it only had one speed. I liked my three-speed anyway.

We rolled into the village of Pudding side by side, then we each went our own way and promised to meet for lunch. I stopped by the hardware store for a few small things and then at the grocer’s for a few things that were larger. I have a basket that’s easy to fill. It didn’t take much. Two stops and I was done. After that, all that was left was lunch. The easiest stop of all. It was time to fill the possum!

John Fox knew to meet me at The Tory’s Café. It was the best place in town for lunch. We both also
