I was very excited to move to Duarte, a small town close to my mom’s family, in 1989. I thought we would finally live the American dream. However, my parents were still struggling to pay off their debt after moving into an apartment.

My anesthesiologist mother was able to land her first American job shortly after we moved to Duarte. She found two lonely hundred-dollar bills miraculously waiting for her on the Kmart floor. My mom turned in the two hundred dollars to her supervisors, and her Spanish-speaking coworkers told her that the two hundred dollars was a trick that local Kmart management played on new employees to see how honest they were.
