Between 1880 and 1910 an estimated four million Italians migrated to North America, hoping to find a better life. Many were escaping dire poverty in southern Italy, where disease, social chaos and natural disasters such as earthquakes added to their burden.
Some Italian migrants worked for a few years in the USA before returning home to their families. Others stayed and became part of the cultural melting pot of modern-day America.
