    #1

My parents were big heroin users and dealers in Long Beach, California. The house they lived in did not look like a dope house from the outside, because they had money from being in the drug underworld.

    #2

My family had many friends and customers who came to the house to see my parents. We were too young and innocent to be afraid of the strangers who entered the house throughout the day and night. We had no comparisons to make that would tell us that our lives were being neglected.

    #3

I had a stutter until I was about 11 or 12, which meant I didn’t speak much. We used our togetherness to comfort each other, and we would wait for our mother to come home from work.

    #4

When my baby brother Dean was born, I was left alone with him. I tried to take care of him and give him his bottle, but I was always afraid to leave my sisters.

    #5

My parents were constantly using the bathroom to shoot heroin, which made it a sanctuary. I would race to the bathroom first, and whoever got there first was given the same level of respect as people sitting on the toilet cover with a tie around their arm.

    #6

I had a difficult time deciding what to do when I heard my mother being beaten by my father. I was afraid to help her, but I also wanted to help my sisters.

    #7

After the attack, I never asked about my father. But I remembered those shoes trying to stomp out the light of my mother, taking me to pain that has lasted forever.
