When I spoke to Nick Cave in March 2020, his world tour had been canceled because of the pandemic. He sounded remarkably philosophical about it. He explained that he had always measured his relationship with Susie by whether or not he was leaving her.

I felt that the lockdown was a time to reflect, and I instinctively felt that it didn’t seem right to perform online from my kitchen, or in my pyjamas, or whatever else some artists were doing at the time. I felt that it was a moment to sit inside history and think.

The songs on my last few albums are still narrative songs, but the narratives have been pushed through the meat grinder. They exist on their own freakish terms. Some fans have not been altogether happy with where my music has gone.

When writing songs, I am not improvising from scratch. I am always writing words that are then tied to a piece of unformed music by way of visual lyrics. When recording, I am a butcher who is happy to cut the legs off a beloved lyric in a heartbeat.
