#1 Everyone gets headaches. The most common type is called migraine, and it can be severe. It is a universal mechanism that produces swelling and inflammation of blood vessels around your head. It is also capable of producing any kind of headache.

#2 The hypothalamus is the most likely location of the migraine control center. It controls many basic functions, including your sleep-wake cycle, hunger and satiety, and hormonal regulation. Many of the triggers that activate your migraine mechanism have input to the hypothalamus.

#3 The most likely location of the migraine control center is the hypothalamus. It controls many basic functions, including your sleep-wake cycle, hunger and satiety, and hormonal regulation. Many of the triggers that activate your migraine mechanism have input to the hypothalamus.

#4 The two determinants of whether or not your migraine will occur are the trigger level and your threshold. Understanding these two determinants and how they relate to each other is the key to controlling your headaches.

    #1

Everyone gets headaches. The migraine mechanism, which is built into us all, generates severe head pain, nausea, sensitivity to bright light and loud noise, and sometimes visual disturbances. It can also cause other neurological symptoms.

    #2

The hypothalamus is the most likely location of the migraine control center. It controls many basic functions, including your sleep-wake cycle, hunger and satiety, hormonal regulation, and the autonomic nervous system.

    #3

Those who suffer from headaches are often misunderstood by those who don’t understand them. They may suffer in silence, even among their family members.

    #4

The two factors that determine whether or not the migraine mechanism is activated are the trigger level and the threshold. The trigger level is the preset level of trigger input at which the mechanism will become activated. This threshold differs from person to person and is largely genetically determined.

    #5

The total trigger level rises above the threshold, and the migraine mechanism is activated. The key to controlling your headaches and other migraine symptoms is to keep your trigger level below your threshold. This means reducing your trigger exposure, raising your threshold, or taking both steps together.

    #6

The 1-2-3 Program can help control the spread of the migraine mechanism. As migraine progresses, a group of nerve cells in the brain stem becomes activated. These signals travel to blood vessels around your head, and as they travel, they cause blood vessels to become swollen and inflamed.

    #7

The final part of the mechanism of migraine is the most controversial. It stems from dysfunction of the part of the hypothalamus that normally governs the autonomic nervous system in an orderly fashion, but misbehaves in the course of migraine.

    #8

The term migraine is misleading when used to designate one specific type of headache,
