Desreen Clarke-Miller

Desreen Clarke-Miller is a woman of faith with a career ranging from teaching to administration from her homeland of Jamaica to Ontario, Canada where she currently resides. Life’s challenges over the years have not been wasted. They have helped her to change her thought process and to realize that God’s perspective, not hers, is the right choice. God has gifted her with the ability to share in poetry, the benefits of His perspective. Desreen enjoys an amazing twenty-five-year marriage to Michael and gave birth to two children. Mikaelia, to whom she dedicated ‘Destined for Greatness’ is currently in graduate school endeavoring to make an impact for Christ in her generation. Kevaughn, her first born succumbed to a brain aneurism while in college, a most traumatic experience which led to the poem, ‘The Day I Died,’ one which she hopes will encourage someone who has suffered such devastating loss. It is her desire that God will use this collection of poems to encourage others to choose His perspective.

    Your Perspective or God’s Perspective? - Desreen Clarke-Miller

    Part 1

    HE GETS IT RIGHT EVERY TIME

    Meet the New Me

    My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live,

    but Christ lives in me.

    Galatians 2:20a¹

    You may have known me by my past behaviour,

    Or the ‘me’ before I met the Saviour,

    But I am no longer what I used to be,

    So please allow me to introduce you to the new me.

    Here’s a woman now walking in her purpose

    Even though surrounded by so much chaos,

    Loved by someone of whom I was oblivious.

    Finally, someone whom I can really trust!

    To please Him is now my entire focus;

    A life of gratitude for me is a must.

    Meet a woman who has changed her direction,

    One who has even changed her conversation,

    Having undergone major transformation

    Beginning with radical salvation,

    Now no longer walking in condemnation.

    Tell me, isn’t that reason for celebration?

    Yes, I’m no longer what I used to be

    Since I encountered someone willing to die for me—

    Such a great price to pay to set me free!

    Then He, being a King, made me a part of royalty.

    What a difference He made for the whole world to see

    As He changed my entire trajectory.

    You may have known me before this change came to be,

    So it is with great pleasure I present to you the new ‘me’.

    Just as I Am

    But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die

    for us while we were still sinners.

    Romans 5:8

    Can God really love me knowing my past

    And my commitment to change that did not last?

    Does He really know all the things that I’ve done

    And how I have rejected His own dear son?

    I know myself, and I am not that lovable;

    There’s not much about me that is admirable.

    So how can He love me as I am?

    So many times I have let Him down;

    My attitude has caused many to frown.

    The disrespect that I’ve shown to His name—

    How can He love me just the same?

    It’s not as if He doesn’t know me,

    Because He is God, and He can see

    Beyond any façade who I really am.

    This for me is so overwhelming,

    Really surpassing my understanding.

    Love of the sacrificial kind

    Is totally beyond the human mind.

    Impossible to fathom why He is so relentless

    In pursuit of someone who could not care less!

    Honestly, that’s who I am.

    This is love that is unconditional,

    Mercy that is non-prejudicial.

    It is the perfect example of grace,

    God giving me life and dying in my place.

    For all that I can never repay,

    But Lord, I hold out no longer: I surrender today

    Just as I am.

    Liberty Street

    So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.

    Galatians 5:1

    Living under all kinds of pressures, bound for so long—

    Enough is enough, this is not where I belong!

    I have made the decision to move on.

    Pressures, when you come back here, you won’t find me—I’m gone.

    Over the years, I was convinced that this was how life was supposed to be,

    Hanging with the neighbours - worry, panic, and anxiety,

    Until someone came from another community and shared with me

    About Jesus, who paid the price so I could move to a new street called Liberty.

    So in my new neighbourhood, my perspective is changing

    As God I am pursuing.

    His love is transforming;

    My very lifestyle is adjusting.

    In my new place, I am progressing;

    His presence I am enjoying.

    Do not try: there is no stopping,

    Because I am just bursting,

    Filled with rejoicing,

    Giving praises to my King,

    And right now I am committing

    That to that old place there is no returning.

    I am on a different trajectory,

    Doing life with Jesus, the one with authority

    To give me the
