Introduction
Guru Nanak Dev Ji is the first Guru (religious teacher) and the founder of the Sikh religion (Sikhism). The basic foundation of Sikhism is laid on the teachings of Guru Nanak. Born in the warrior (kshatriya) Hindu family, Nanak was inclined to spirituality from early childhood.
Nanak believed that God is one and should be worshipped by Hindus and Muslims as one. There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim,
he said. This feeling inspired him to start Sikhism. According to Nanak, Sikhism was a religion that could include both Hindus and Muslims as one.
Born in Talwandi (now in Pakistan), the place is renamed as ‘Nankana Sahib’ after him. It
