#1 She did it all. And then some. Martha’s duties were so heavy that she was often called the most competent female in the neighborhood. Martha’s single minded devotion to her family’s success was such that she had little time for socializing and no desire to do so. Martha was a stay-at-home mom, but she didn’t wish to just sit around. She was busy building the foundation of her family’s wealth—all while raising seven children and running the household. Not long ago, I read a book about a woman named Harriet Beecher Stowe. She was the author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, which told the story of a group of slaves who escaped to freedom in the North and became an important tool in the fight against slavery. As a young girl, Harriet wanted to be a teacher, but her family could not afford it. Instead, she became a teacher’s assistant, and later opened an academy of her own. Because her husband had died young, she needed to support her growing family as well as pay for her own education. By age 21, she had published two books and had become a sought-after speaker.

    #1

Women have always had more to do than men, and this has not changed over time. Being a woman requires more stamina, creativity, and wisdom than I ever dreamed as a young girl.

    #2

You have a deep desire to know and love God. You’re not after more head knowledge, but heart-to-heart intimacy. You’re just hungry enough and desperate enough to want it all.

    #3

The conflict between Mary and Martha is a perfect example of the struggle women face in the Church. We want to be like Mary, but we’re often told to be like Martha.

    #4

The story of Martha and Mary is a great example of how we can be overwhelmed by the world around us. We tend to praise Mary for her perfectionism, but Martha appeals more to my perfectionist tendencies.

    #5

Jesus’ words in Luke 10 are incredibly freeing for those of us on the performance treadmill of life. It isn’t more he requires of us, but rather less.

    #6

The Bible does not tell us much about Mary and Martha, but from what we do know, it is clear that they were very different people. Mary was more prone to walk in the dew of the morning, while Martha was more likely to pick the roses and arrange them in a vase with baby's breath and ferns.

    #7

The Bible isn’t clear whether or not Jesus visited the home in Bethany for the first time on this day, but Mary chose to let someone else do the serving so she could listen to him. She ignored tradition and broke social etiquette to get as close to him as possible.

    #8

The struggle between work and worship is real, and it affects everyone. We live in constant tension between the urgent
