    Introduction

I’ve been very fortunate to love several amazing dogs. I’m hopeful that I’ll recover from my current condition enough to love many more. The truly amazing thing, though, is how much I’ve learned from the wonderful floofs it has been my great pleasure to know.

I’m not being facetious or joking about learning how to catch food with my mouth. I’m talking about serious moral and life lessons these pups taught me. Things that seem poignant and common sense after you learn them, but that have very little, vague meanings without a real-life context. Dogs are outstanding teachers, if you’re willing to watch them.

In each chapter of this book, I’ll focus on a single thing I was taught by dogs. I will use one or more of my beloved dogs as example teachers. Since they’ll be recurring characters in this book, I thought I’d take the opportunity to introduce you to them right now. Most of them are pictured on the cover, but a description of their personalities helps, too.

My first pup was a Northern Border Collie named Suzy Q. Yes, like the oldies song. She was sweet and feisty and a wonderful family dog. Her coat was black and white and beautiful. She was a country dog and loved it. She was an outside dog with her own doghouse. She was a sweet girl, and I loved her very much.

Our next family dog was a yellow Labrador Retriever named Buzz. Talk about a character. That boy loved to play, to hang out with us, to swim in the lake, and to wander around and visit the neighbors. Even when he got older. When I would play my guitar or piano or sing, he would just hang out and listen until he fell asleep. One day he simply disappeared. We think he wandered to a neighbor’s house and was stolen. We still miss him.

We bred Buzz, once, and kept one of his pups, who we named Deuce. He was another character, just like his sire, except that his coloring was slightly different: he was a rare cinnamon color. A little while after Deuce was born, we also got a black Lab named Bart. He was my Mom’s little sweetheart...and in truth, he was just an all-around sweet dog.

Deuce and Bart were da boyz. Just thick as thieves, two peas in a pod, brothers, littermates, and snuggle buddies. They had a reputation around the lake, especially at the restaurants. No joke. Those boys had their own burger order on lake days. They were an awesome pair. Deuce died first. Bart died several years later, after getting a new brother: a chocolate Lab named Dutch.

When he was young, Dutch had a really hard time with people. It’s possible he was abused when he was a little puppy. My Mom put him
