Chapter 1
Summer Fun
The shy, large lizard waited patiently.
Its eyes were unblinking, and its head was very still. It knew a threat was close by. So it stayed hidden, out of sight, thoroughly shielded by the rock tunnel.
Nearby, an unfortunate rabbit moved at the wrong time and was noticed by Molly. She had to chase it. The race was on as it ran under trees and around bushes. Molly was very excited as she zipped by.
Laney saw the rabbit at the same time as Molly. She ran around from the opposite direction, trying to catch the rabbit before Molly did.
The white rabbit’s tail bounced up and down as it ran and was barely visible in the grass. The small rabbit and two determined dogs zigged and zagged across the desert.
I will catch this rabbit today,
Molly thought happily.
Jumping over a mound of rocks, Laney just missed landing in a small, round cactus. She slowed a second before speeding off again in pursuit.

Once again, the rabbit was too fast and soon disappeared leaving Molly and Laney to search as the scent dwindled.
Finally, they gave up, determined to do better next time.
Breathing hard, Laney just wanted to rest. She pranced forward and nudged Molly.
I think that lucky rabbit got away because it saw the whites of your eyes. That look would scare anyone,
said Laney smiling.
The dogs loved this southwest high desert area.
Molly was the leader and this was her playground. Laney and Charlie happily followed her and, over time, explored almost everywhere.
They had chased a rabbit and a couple of lizards, all who quickly ran to safety.
Now, it was time to relax and they rested in the shade of the rock mound.
First to fall asleep was Charlie. He was sprawled out with his head on his paws.
Laney had settled down but she was fully alert. Something didn’t feel
