    introduction

The Bible is not just a book that was written thousands of years ago. The Bible is the spoken word of God. God is the author of the bible, not man. And that’s why the bible has the power to change lives. But what is written in the word of God must be applied to your everyday life for it to work. There are many other motivational books that you can read. Some are better than others. These books will promise you success, freedom, peace, and contentment. Some may even give you temporary success, freedom, peace, and contentment. But it will be short lived because it does not deal with the root of the problem. That root problem is sin, and until this sin is dealt with you will never fill that empty space in your soul.

There has always been people and religions who did not want everyone to hear the word of God. You must ask yourself, why is it that so many people, and governments have attempted to prevent people from hearing God’s written word? From the time the church was birth which we can say started on the day of Pentecost. Because this is the day that God poured out His Holy Spirit on believers. Until our present day, the word of God has been under attack.

Something happened on that day of Pentecost that gave the disciples boldness and wisdom. They were speaking languages that that they never learned before. The scripture teaches us in Acts chapter 2 that there were people added to the Church daily. But not everyone was happy with this, oneness mind set, and proclamation of the Gospel message in the early Church.

There were apostles and disciples who were killed because of their belief in the lord Jesus Christ. Why were people really upset with this new religion or new teaching? They were upset because the Devil was upset. And when people are hostile to God’s word, it can only mean they are working for Satan. The apostle and disciples were not attempting to take over any earthly kingdom. They were preparing the people’s minds and hearts for God’s Kingdom. Not every new religion is good. But this new religion, which had been preached in the Old Testament, but was now being made plain in the New Testament. This gospel message was a direct attack on Satan’s kingdom.

Because now the interpreter, which is the Holy Spirit has arrived, to bring understanding to the people of God. This did not set well with the religious leaders of that day. You will notice that the religious leaders of that day, became hostile towards the people who were following the teaching of the lord Jesus Christ.

The believers now have the power of the Holy Spirit living within their hearts, and they have the assurance that Jesus Christ has risen from the dead. So, the power and boldness that they are displaying is not because of something they came up with on their own. The power comes from the preaching of the unadulterated Gospel of God.

This Gospel that the early church was proclaiming will break the shackles of your hearts and minds. Because every struggle, fight, or war starts in the mind. The pure gospel message can do a jailbreak on you heart and mind. You don’t need to preach another gospel. Just preach the word of God and it will free you from a troubled mind.

Whenever I see a salesperson attempting to sell me something. I like to ask if they have tried the product that they are selling. Because if you are attempting to sell me something that you have not sampled or tried yourself, then I’m not buying. The early church not only had sampled the product of this gospel that they were preaching. But they had sold all to get this product.

The lord Jesus makes this argument when he talks about the hidden treasure and the pearl in the Book of Matthew.

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it. (1)

People will never be happy until they enter the kingdom of God. And no, you don’t need to wait to get to heaven in order to enter His kingdom. When John the Baptist showed up, he proclaimed, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near. (2) And when the lord Jesus Christ came on the scene he said, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near. (3)

When the disciples asked the Master to teach them to pray, he said to them, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. (4) So, first God’s name should be sanctified. We should always show reverence to the name of God, because he is holy. Then the prayer addresses the kingdom of God coming to earth, as it is in heaven.

God’s kingdom comes when his people submit themselves to the teachings of His word. It is when we renounce our ways and submit to His ways. That’s what we saw in the early church. The kingdom had come because it says, All the believers were together and had everything in common. (5)

Life can be bitter, and it can be hard. Having something, or Someone who can carry you through the storms of life can be life changing. Spending time with the God of the bible will give you true joy, and peace. Money, power, or even a better education does not mean you will feel complete or content. There are millions of people with money, power, and education, and yet they still are not content in their hearts and minds.

How many rich, powerful, educated people have committed suicide? If riches, education, and power made you happy then people with these 3 things would never commit suicide. The fact is we all have a soul, and that inner being we call a soul needs to be filled with something spiritual that the world cannot offer you.

The lord Jesus Christ is the only person that can fill that emptiness that is in your soul. People try all types of quick fixes that they believe will bring them fulfillment. But these fixes are like placing a band-aid on someone’s heart, who has just had a heart attack. There is no blood getting to the heart, so a bad-aid will not fix that problem. The lack of oxygen is causing chest pains. You are having difficulty breathing. You are having discomfort in your neck and back. There is a pain in your arm and shoulder. What can a band-ad do for that?

Well people are having a soul problem, and they are attempting to use all these methods that some guru, or psychologist has told them to do. But none of these so-called solutions addresses the root cause of the problem. This is a heart issue that is in the heart, and mind. This is what the word of God calls, the sin problem. And there is but one doctor that can solve this issue. His name being Doctor Jesus Christ. He is a heart and soul specialist.

You have an appointment with him that you did not setup. Just like Zacchaeus in Luke chapter 19 had an appointment with Jesus that he did not schedule. The lord Jesus went through Jericho to get his lost sheep named Zacchaeus. Zacchaeus thought that he simply wanted to see Jesus. He wanted to see the man that everyone was talking about. Zacchaeus heard that Jesus was passing by, so he climbed a tree so he could see Jesus as he was passing by. Little did Zacchaeus know that the lord Jesus Christ had set an appointment for him in the sycamore tree.

Zacchaeus is not aware of this appointment. But when the lord Jesus comes to the meeting spot, which was the sycamore tree, He invites Himself to Zacchaeus home. After this appointment with the Good Doctor, Zacchaeus repents of his sins and enters the kingdom of God.

When you read this book, my prayer is that you will apply these things in the book to your life. Because freedom is near if you will allow the One who does all things well to come into your heart.

    Chapter 1

    The Hunger for Freedom

Before you get started on your road to victory and freedom, I want you to do something for me. It is a sort of spiritual diagnostic examination. It is not so much an examination as it is a way to kick start your journey to contentment and freedom. I want you to imagine that you and your family are hungry and have no way of providing food for yourselves. There is a shortage of food in the world, and even if the supermarket had food, you have no way to purchase the food because money is no longer valuable.

But there is another family who has all the food it needs and for a full year feed you and your entire family. You go and pick up food weekly for an entire year. The family then notices something about you and your family. You never said thank you. All you did was ask for more and more each time. You would ask for clothing, and you said your kids wanted new iPhones while the world was starving.

Do you think the family that was providing the food to you and your family would conclude that you have one ungrateful family?

Well, we go to God Almighty daily in prayer (those of us who pray daily) but every time we go to God, it is always our asking God to do this and give that. Do you see how God could view us as ungrateful? Many times, we are not content, not because we do not have all we truly need. But because we are ungrateful. We should always season our prayers to God with thanksgiving. Why not, before you ask Him for anything, start the prayer off with thanksgiving?

Why not start by praising him for all the wonderful things He has already done? You will find something consistent throughout scripture in those who walk with God. They had a heart and mind to praise and give thanks to God’s unmeasurable blessings. Few of the Psalms from 1 through 150 do not give God thanks and few do not include praise to the God of Glory.

The last five Psalms of holy scripture start with praise for the LORD who is certainly most worthy to be praised. We hear lots of sermons and teachings on the radio, tv and the internet. People are always speaking on End Times, the Anti-Christ, revelations they received, and mostly how to get a blessing. But how many sermons or messages do you hear about how to be thankful? I believe that this is the reason that we see so much misery. We never learn to praise the LORD, let alone to make it a priority.

An ungrateful heart leads to anxiety, a lack of joy and bondage. Why are so many people in debt? They believed they had to have something right now, and they refused to wait. There are some things that cannot wait. Thanksgiving is one of them.

So, the first thing I would like you to do before you read any further is stop and get down on your knees and thank the God of heaven for all the many blessings, He has given you.

    STOP FOR A PRAYER PAUSE.

    The Hunger for Contentment

    Now let’s begin.

There is something in all humans that makes us want to be free, content and at peace. What people in every nation or country are searching for is true freedom. Not everyone realizes what he or she is really craving is peace and freedom. So, he or she may attempt to do many things in search of this elusive peace and freedom because there is an empty place in the minds and hearts of all humans that yearns for contentment. Most will try any and everything to fill that void. Let me start by saying that there is not anything that the world can offer you that will fill this void. Many attempt to fill that empty place with something or someone. The problem with these hungers and cravings that we feel deep in our souls is we cannot satisfy them through earthly means. People are seeking to fill a spiritual need with carnal devices. Some of these devices are worse than others, but all leaves the individual still empty, and most often only leads to more bondage.

The thing about seeking to have what the world calls freedom is that it mostly only leads to some kind of addiction. Seeking freedom through drugs will only lead you to an addiction to drugs. Some people take drugs to escape a problem. People want to forget about their pains and problems. Many think that if they take drugs, and the drugs made them feel good, the high would then somehow deliver them from their problems in life.

Yet the byproduct of using drugs will send each person into more bondage. Because then he or she may need money to keep up with their drug habit. So now not only is he or she not free of worry, but the freedom that they sought has still eluded them. And the byproduct, if the truth was told, is that they are less free because of their new habit. Most people try drugs because they think it will make them feel good. They think drugs will allow them to forget about their problems. Some try drugs because others are doing it. Don’t forget that misery has an affinity for the company. I have never spoken to anyone who was on drugs for long periods of time, and they seem free, or happy.

Many people say that they are having a blast getting high or being drunk. But this so-called happiness is an illusion. Some people will even declare that I’m not addicted to whatever their habit is. They say I can stop anytime I want. I have been doing this for 30 years and I’m not addicted. They don’t even realize what they are saying. If you do something for 30 years, whether good or bad, then you’re addicted. Especially when that something is destroying your body and mind. Can anyone say that drugs make us healthier?

Some people look for freedom and happiness through relationships. These people go from one person to the next. They think if they can find the right partner, it will make them feel free, happy or at peace. They think it will take away that empty feeling that is tugging at their souls. And there is nothing wrong with seeking a superb partner to spend the rest of your life with. Some people get married because they want to be sexually active. But don’t get married based on sexually activity. And don’t get married when you are a mental mess yourself. It will only cause the other person lots of problems and you will still not be at peace. A relationship can give you certain satisfaction and even bring you some happiness but even in a great relationship, you will not get true peace, contentment or freedom. A great relationship can be very rewarding, but this will not satisfy that craving in the soul.

A great relationship with another person cannot give you eternal peace. Will you be able to live with happiness and freedom if something happens to the other person? What if that relationship ends? Because as you know, tomorrow is not promised to any of us. That means it will not fulfill me in my soul, even in a good relationship. Also, it is a fact that the person cannot be with you all the time. Often, one person will smother the other person who they are in the relationship with because the loved one has become a source of peace, or so he or she thinks. That person must call every 20 minutes to calm themselves down. He or she will text 30 or 40 times a day. The other person cannot even focus on work or a moment of peace because he or she has become so dependent on someone else to bring happiness and joy. These types of relationships are not healthy.

Some people will go from one person to the other seeking fulfillment. Yet they are left feeling empty. Sex can be like a drug, and that high wears off just about as fast. And then they are looking for the next high. And just like drugs, their hearts and minds will not have true fulfillment through sex. You’ll find that sex never leaves your soul satisfied if you are looking for lasting happiness. That does not mean sex is bad. Sex can be great in a loving, committed and Biblical relationship.

Some people use anger as a drug to fill that emptiness in their soul. They walk around angry all the time. Every little thing pushes their buttons. They have a chip on their shoulders because someone may have wronged them years ago. Their parents could have treated other siblings better. It could be a boyfriend or girlfriend that was unfaithful. It could be a bully at school. So, they don’t allow anyone into their hearts. They guard their hearts, and they think this makes them
