The Chase
Cursing his name as I jump from one rooftop to the next, isn’t helping the situation I’ve landed myself in. I knew I should’ve stayed away from that bar tonight, but the thirst is excruciating. I didn’t leave the man left for dead and I did try to let someone know that he was passed out in that alley. But, the blood dripping down my chin told a different story, and now I’ve been dodging people out to kill me for a couple of days.
The sound of a bullet passing close to my ear, forces me to jump off the thirty-foot-high rooftop and down into the street below. I hear multiple footsteps running nearby and faint yells about which direction I went. Looking up to the building I just jumped off, I see an open window on the second floor. In one leap, I grab ahold of the window sill and pull myself in.
Falling onto the floor after climbing in, I speedily turn around to look back out the window, catching about four men running by on the street. I’m grateful of finding someone foolish enough to leave their window open at night. If my life wasn’t in danger, I would almost find this funny. Turning away from the window, I rest against the wall and slide down to the floor. Pulling my legs close to me and resting my head on my knees.
How long will I be able to keep this up?
As if on cue, I hear men’s voices from outside the window. Their yelling jolting my body from its sitting position, forcing me back up on my feet. Standing to the side, I look down to the street, keeping myself out of view of the angry mob that’s after me. I watch them shine their flashlights all around the darkened stretch of the street. I chuckle to myself as if having the inside scoop on where the villain is and the heroes are none the wiser. Well, that is, if you could call people trying to kill you heroes.
My quieted laughter comes to a halt as the door behind me is kicked in, the solid door banging against the wall, causing me to spin on my heels and see three burly men charging in at me. I rush to turn back around and make a jump for it out the window but only half my body makes it out before a violent tug on my ankle pulls me right back into the apartment that I had high hopes for keeping me safe.
Shit!
It’s the last word I say before a bag is placed over my head and an excruciating pain goes through the right side of it. My eyes begin to cross and I feel my body start to fall over.
...
Opening my eyes, my vision is blurred and I try to blink away the grogginess of my pounding headache. Those same men that were in the apartment are standing around in the room I’m in. One next to me, one by a fireplace on the wall to my left, and one next to the door across from me.
