About this ebook

He knew he would stay by her side from the first time he met her, but now Warner's feelings towards his best friend begins to blossom into something more than what he intended. Though the two of them are oblivious towards what's going on between them at first, Warner is the first to figure it out... somewhat. Unfortunately, due to her extreme self-consciousness about her unique appearance, Sahara doesn't get the clue of how her best friend feels towards her.

This short story will have you falling in love with two friends that grow up together and realize the potential in being more than 'just friends'.

Warner:
"I take a deep breath. I never lie to Angel and right now is no exception. She didn't want any lines blurred, but this will change us. I'm feeling nervous right now and… Scared?! That's a first for me. I think back to the first time I tried to tell her how I felt, I have to make sure I say the right thing this time."

Sahara:
"I wish today was a happier day. I wish I could hold Jake. I wish I could take him and run away. He always calls me his Angel, and right now I wish more than anything it was the truth."

    Introduction

Mel and Liz Daniels have a daughter named Sahara that they try to protect from the negativity of the world because she’s different. Anne and Smith have a son named Warner, who develops a need to protect Sahara for reasons that make the Daniels fall in love with him.

Growing up Warner Jacobs becomes a cocky tough guy that hides his emotions with sarcasm, but remains by Sahara’s side for personal reasons. On the other hand, Sahara Daniels remains cautious with people because of her appearance and relies on Warner more than she should.

Is there potential for romance in their future, or will they be unable to confront each other on their feelings towards one another? Grow up with these two characters as you read from both of their points of view through friendship, life, loss, pain, laughter, heartbreak, and love.

    Meeting Him

H oney, the lady down the street, Anne I think her name is, she stopped by today.

That’s wonderful Mel. Did she happen to say anything as to why she was stopping by or did she stand there? You know we chose this neighborhood because there was a low crime rate. Goodness, I hope they’re not casing the house.

You know, Liz, one of the reasons I love you so much is because of that smart mouth of yours.

She laughs, So what did she say?.

Her son’s birthday party is this Saturday. She wanted to invite us since Sahara is his age.

Oh, I don’t know Mel. If it’s a kid’s party that means other kids will be there. They might not be good to her because she’s... special.

He walks over to her and hugs her from behind, Honey, you know you won’t always be able to protect her. She’ll start kindergarten this year. Are you going to go to school with her?.

    She cracks a smile, Maybe..

It’ll be good for her. Good for us. Give us a chance to meet the people in town.

Alright, but the moment I sense something’s off with her, we leave.

    Deal!

    Saturday

Anne walks Mel and Liz over to a tall burly man, And this is my husband.

He reaches out to shake Mel’s hand, Smith Jacobs, good to meet you..

    Mel asks, Smith?.

I know. I usually get the ‘and what’s you first name’ question. Family tradition to name the first son with two last names. I stuck with it too.

A scrawny brown-haired boy runs up to Smith, Dad, when are we getting ice cream?.

Soon Warner. Everyone isn’t here yet.

Anne speaks up, Warner this is the nice family I told you about that moved into the house down the street, Mr. and Mrs. Daniels..

Liz smiles at him, Nice to meet you Warner. Happy birthday..

Thank..., Warner’s eyes grow wide like an owl as he sees a girl with white hair step next to Mrs. Daniels, Who’s that?.

A wave of nervousness hits Liz, This is my daughter... Sahara..

Warner takes a couple of steps towards Sahara, and she takes a step back with her head down. Hi, my name is Warner Jac...

She lifts her face up to him. He’s fascinated by her eyes; one brown and one blue.

She smiles at him, Hi Jake, I’m Sahara.

Anne chuckles and places her hand on Liz’s arm, Come on, I’ll introduce you to some of your other neighbors..

    Liz protests, I don’t know....

Anne gives her a sincere smile, They’ll be fine Liz, trust me. Besides, we won’t be too far away..

She lets out a breath, Sure..

Warner holds his hand out to Sahara, You want to go play on the swings?. She nods her head and takes his hand. After they start swinging Warner’s eyes focus on the way Sahara’s hair flows in the wind every time she goes back and forth; different.

    He stops swinging, Hey Sahara.

    Yes?

    Are you an Angel?

She laughs out loud as she continues to swing, No!

Then why is your hair white?

Mommy told me an Angel kissed me in her belly..

So, you could be an Angel?

    No.

Then why would an Angel kiss you?

    I don’t know.

Angels only hang around other Angels.

    That’s not true.

    Yes it is!

She stops swinging, Stop it Jake! I’m not an Angel!.

    I’m not Jake!

What? Yes you are, that’s what you said!

Warner thinks for a moment. He doesn’t remember saying his name was Jake, No I didn’t!

    Yes you did Jake!

Fine! If you keep calling me that I’ll call you Angel!

Her eyes narrow at him, You better not, Jake.

    Angel! Angel! Angel! Angel!

She takes off in the direction of her mom. Once she reaches her, she has tears brimming her eyes. Mommy! Jake is picking on me!

    Liz speedily stands up, What?!.

Liz’s voice startles Anne, What did he do sweetheart?!.

Sahara rubs her eyes, He keeps calling me Angel.

Anne and Liz look at each other and laugh.

It’s not funny. I’m not an Angel.

Liz picks her up and caresses her hair, Why are you upset about that baby?.

    I told him I’m not!

Liz laughs again, And what did you do?.

I called him Jake, but that’s what he told me his name was mommy, he did, I know it!

Warner runs up with his friend Harry. Warner were you picking on Sahara?, Anne says as she places her hand on her hip.

Well she called me Jake and I’m not!

Harry chimes in, Yeah girl, his name is Warner!.

Warner stills. He turns to look at Harry with a death glare, Don’t talk to My Angel that way!

    Harry steps back, What?!.

Warner jumps on him. They roll around on the ground throwing punches. Anne and Liz are so stunned on what Warner just said they don’t move to stop the boys from fighting. Smith and Mel run over and grab them up.

What’s all this about?!, Smith says as he’s holding Warner back from jumping on Harry again.

    Because he’s stupid!

Don’t talk to her that way!

Oh yeah, well she’s stupid too!

Warner gets out of his dad’s hold and jumps on Harry again, You will never say that about My Angel again! No one will!.

    Growing Up

    Sahara / Angel

Y ou know Jake, every time I look at you, I want pancakes.

What? Why would you want pancakes?

Because your eyes are the same color as honey, and honey is amazing on pancakes.

    That’s dumb Angel.

Not my fault you never tried it!

Nice to know my eyes make you hungry., he rolls his eyes and smiles.

Come on Angel, or we’ll be late for school.

    Okay, Okay!

I run behind Jake up the street so we can catch the bus before it leaves. I’m already going through a bad case of the jitters this morning, so I definitely don’t want to be late. It is the first day of 9th grade and I hardly slept a wink last night. I’m not the shyest person in the world, you know maybe I’m not shy at all, I just never know how people will react to my appearance, so maybe I’m just cautious with people.

Jake always tells me not to worry about it because the only thing that matters is what he thinks about me. I would have thought that was sweet if he didn’t fart on me after he said it. I laugh to myself, he’s so disgusting.

Jake makes me sit by the window when we get on the bus. Whenever we’re on a bus he never lets me sit by the aisle. Something about security.

We walk to my first class once we get to school. I wish he was at least in the first class of the day with me. It would help my nerves if he was.

Calm down Angel, or you’re going to faint.

Easy for you to say, you’re such a people person.

Well, the best thing about that is, I can make sure only good people are around you since I meet everyone first.

    Whatever Jake.

At least we have lunch together, so if I don’t catch you in the halls before then, I’ll meet you at your locker. Okay?

    Alright.

He kisses me on the top of the head, See you later Angel.

    Later Jake.

I walk in and head to a seat in the back of the class. Less attention to myself in the back. There are 2 girls already sitting back there; they stare at me as I take my seat. Deep breath. I look at the clock; 5 minutes
