About this ebook
Krishnamurthy (a) Kittu lives in a multistoried apartment at Chennai. A retired Tamil teacher, settled in a remote village, after having lost his wife, moved to his daughter’s home at Chennai.
Kittu grandpa is fondly addressed by the children in the apartments as ‘Story Grandpa’ as he used to gather children on Sundays and tell interesting stories with an apparent moral in each and every story. The children, who are generally saddled to mobiles, televisions, video games etc., shun them for a while to surround the grandpa and listen to his mesmerizing stories. In addition to story-telling he used sing songs and requests the children also to sing, dance and play. To keep them aware of green environment he encourages them to plant saplings. His stories were also filled with humor coupled with a touch of humanity.
The stories unfolded by Grandpa form the rest of the book.

Set of stories that is bound to create awareness
‘Kuzhandai Ilakkiya Selvar’ Venkatraman
Relentless literary contribution for the tender kids by Edaimaruthour Ki Manjula
is undoubtedly a noble service with dedication.
She has created a niche for herself and has a huge following amongst the readers by her articles and stories in Dinamani and Siruvar Mani. Engaging, Captivating, Interesting, Informative with a moral in each and every story is her speciality.
Her other books include ‘Gift of Truth’ (உண்மை தந்த பரிசு) that contains a collection of good stories for kids and ‘Magazines and Literature for Children’ (சிறுவர்களுக்கான இதழ்களும், இலக்கியமும்), a piece of literary research work to read and enjoy not only for children but also serves as an archive for reference by scholars.
Yet another book ‘Stories by Grandpa’ (தாத்தா சொன்ன கதைகள்) by her is about an old man Kittu who resides in the apartment and tells interesting stories with a moral to the kids. The story-line and plot are something extra-ordinary never before thought of by any author. All the eleven stories are equally good with a moral tagged to them but a few stories like The Foolish Monkey, Grandma Who Changed Her Mind, Sunbird and the Ant, Somu and the Turkey Berry, Crow and Janani, Super Man Suresh are some of the best among equals worth mentioning.
Whenever we discuss about a trivial matter we say it is a turkey-berry issue. But the fact remains that turkey-berry, though small in size, has a lot of healthy ingredients in it. To create awareness about the goodness of turkey-berry amongst the present day younger generation, the author has taken pains to describe in detail the medicinal features available in it not only to the children but also to the elders. I am sure after reading this story everyone will definitely have a fascination to taste turkey-berry. Every living creature works for its bread. It is only the human being that expects others to spoon feed him. Hence we should be like the birds that never rest and always keeps flying for their prey. In the story ‘Sunbird and the Ant’ she defines ‘how sunbirds wake up early in the morning and fly around in search of food. They are not idle. They are not spoon fed like human beings. Upon seeing them we have to learn the lesson not only to wake up early but also to work for our bread. We have to be active and do the given work instantly and immediately without being lazy’. This reminds me of the sayings by Tamil poet Avvayar in ‘Aathichoodi’ viz. ‘Get Up Before Sunrise’ (வைகறைத் துயிலெழு) and ‘Do not be Lazy’ (சோம்பித் திரியேல்).
The technological development in visual media, social media and televisions are galloping in leaps and bounds. No doubt they have affected the children’s studies to a certain extent, but the fact remains that good things available in them do get their rousing reception. Likewise the short stories collection with an inherent moral in this book by Dr Manjula will definitely create awareness in the minds of children and mould them as responsible future citizens of this nation.
