#1 The city of Durham, North Carolina, was beginning to stir to a new work week on this Monday morning. High-intensity lights still illuminated nearly deserted downtown streets. The sweet, pungent aroma that always hovered in the air was stronger than usual.

#2 One of Durham’s most prosperous northern suburbs, Fox Drive, was the scene of a shooting. A shrill, piercing beep startled architect Doug Griffin from his sleep. He rushed to the house and found a boy barely in his teens standing in the doorway.

#3 A neighbor, James Wingate, came into the room carrying his trauma box. He began recording vital statistics as Griffin and another rescuer, Bob Hunt, turned Russ’s head to begin suctioning the blood and mucus from his air passages.

#4 The first responders were very worried about the patient, but they were also very concerned about the cocked pistol still lying on the bed. If it had gone off once, might it not do so again.

    #1

The city of Durham, North Carolina, was beginning to stir to a new work week on this Monday morning. High-intensity lights still illuminated nearly deserted downtown streets. The sweet, pungent aroma that always hovered in the air was stronger than usual.

    #2

One of Durham’s most prosperous northern suburbs, Fox Drive, was the scene of a shooting. A shrill, piercing beep startled architect Doug Griffin from his sleep. He rushed to the house and found a boy barely in his teens standing in the doorway.

    #3

A neighbor, James Wingate, came into the room carrying his trauma box. He began recording vital statistics as Griffin and another rescuer, Bob Hunt, turned Russ’s head to begin suctioning the blood and mucus from his air passages.

    #4

The first responders were very worried about the patient, but they were also very concerned about the cocked pistol still lying on the bed. If it had gone off once, might it not do so again.

    #5

When the ambulance arrived, Barbara insisted that Wilson take her to the hospital, instead of the other way around. Wilson knew that Russ’s father had had heart surgery some years ago, and he thought perhaps he and their minister, Malbert Smith, should go to the house to tell him what had happened.

    #6

Wilson told Doug Griffin to document everything he saw and heard, and he would attach it to the regular report. He had heard nothing about Barbara that would have led him to believe that she was anything other than a devoted mother, a loving wife, and an upstanding employee.

    #7

Doris Stager, Russ’s mother, was told that her son had been shot in the head. She immediately drove to the hospital, frantic with worry. When she asked about her son, she was told that he was in the waiting room, but no one would tell her anything else.

    #8

The enormity of the situation finally hit Doris when she saw her husband rush past the glass doors of the emergency room. The bullet had passed through Russ’s brain and lodged in the front of his skull, and the doctors said they could do nothing to save him.

    #9

After Doris had left, Marva suggested that Barbara take a break from the situation and go home for a rest. But Barbara insisted on staying with her brother, because she didn’t want to leave him without permission from the doctors.

    #10

When they returned, the doctors told them that Russ had died. Doris and Al walked the hospital hallway, crying and asking why. Their grandson, Bryan, was a student at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington,
