Twenty-one year old Dillon Welch wrote a mathematical equation on the whiteboard before turning to ask the large class, Would anyone like to attempt this for me?

No one volunteered.

No one?

I’ll try it, Mr Welch.

He smiled as Collette Adams came to the board and took the dry-wipe marker from him. He watched her as she periodically turned to the class to explain everything she wrote until she arrived at the solution.

Thank you, Collette.

She was going to make a fantastic teacher or lecturer one day. Less than a month after he first started teaching at the sixth form college he’d noticed her potential and she kept astonishing him. Her ability to solve complex mathematical theorems was phenomenal. She was a joy to teach and he was always willing to give her extra tuition. In fact, he went to her parents’ house each Wednesday to tutor her for two hours, free of charge as her parents weren’t well-off. He refused to take payment, but usually joined them for dinner afterwards.

As usual as soon as the bell went the class emptied like water out of a broken pipe. All except for Collette, she gathered her books and came over to his desk.

Did you manage to finish the work I gave you on Tuesday?

Yes. There was one part that I wasn’t sure about, but I attempted it anyway.

Pull a chair over and let’s discuss it.

Her answer was correct, but he showed her an alternative method of arriving at the same answer, and thus a way of double checking it.

I’ll mark the rest of them later, he promised.

Do you have some more for me to do? she asked eagerly.

You should be out having fun with your boyfriend this weekend, not stuck behind a Maths book!

I don’t fancy any of those immature little boys! I’d rather solve an equation than kiss one of them!

He laughed and handed her two sheets of paper which were stapled together. There you go, attempt as many as you can but show your workings.
