I grew up in Warsaw Indiana. I started writing when I was in third grade. The reason I started writing was to entertain my friends and family. I loved telling stories and eventually it turned into writing them down so I could tell new friends. I try to write something everyday, even if it is just a sentence or two. My grandparents, Rodger and Mary Phillips, owned a small campground around the lake. I spent a lot of my childhood there and would often go out into the woods for inspiration. My other favorite spot was the pier out on the lake. One of my biggest inspirations now is my 17 year old son. He was diagnosed with Autism when he was 3 years old.Watching him grow and learn and the way he interacts with people inspires me. His own desire to chase his own dreams has pushed me to do the same.

    Chapter One

I want to tell you my story. I can’t say it’ll change your life. Only you, Jesus and God can make your life change. But maybe my story can help you? It’s a story about how one little chance can lead to something so amazing that words just can’t describe it. Take a seat and relax. It won’t take that long to tell. Close your eyes and just listen as I speak. My name is Kaleb Zeke Vione. And my story starts out when I was a junior in high school. In just a couple of weeks I was going to have my driver’s license and I was finally going to be free to do what I wanted, when I wanted and how I wanted to. Funny how sometimes what we want the most ends up being the one thing we hate in the end. Anyway…let me start my story.

Kaleb! my mother’s angry voice yelled my name. Kaleb! Are you still in bed? You have twenty minutes to get ready for school! Hurry up!

Ugh! Mom let me sleep a few more minutes! I yelled back.

In a few moments I heard the thumping of my mother’s footsteps as she came angrily up the stairs. My bedroom door swung open and she stopped a few feet from my bed letting out an annoyed sigh as usual, Kaleb Zeke. She sighed heavily. Why do you always do this? Would it hurt you to be on time for school for once in your life?

I sleepily opened my eyes and rolled them up to stare at her, What is your problem? Why does it matter to you if I’m late? It’s my life not yours. I don’t care if I’m late.

That doesn’t matter, she snapped at me. I care about you. I want you to do well. I don’t want to see you get kicked out of school because you were late too many times. Now get up, get dressed and get going!

With that she stormed out of my room and back down the stairs. I frowned and buried my face into my pillow. What did it matter to her? I didn’t understand. It was my life. If I wanted to waste my day in bed why couldn’t I? I grumbled and pulled myself out of bed. No use in lying around waiting for her to come back. It would end up like it always did. We’d fight and yell at each other until one of us finally gave up. I threw some clothes on and walked downstairs. I flopped down in a chair and ate the soggy bowl of cereal that my mother had made me earlier when she tried to wake me up the first time. I would give her the occasional glance as she would snap at me to hurry up. After the fourth time I rolled my eyes at her I figured she would give up. But instead I got yelled again. I slammed my spoon down and let out a growl. I yelled back at her and she yelled back at me. I then stormed upstairs and into the bathroom. I cleaned up and hurried downstairs. I wanted to get to school now more than ever. And the only reason was to get away from her! She was so annoying! She drove me nuts! I don’t understand why she cares so much. Not like it’s her life I’m ruining. We climbed into the car and she drove away from our house. The drive was silent as usual. And as usual she gave me the ‘I love you honey. Have a good day at school. I’ll see you tonight’. Which I replied with my usual ‘yeah mom’. I hurried into the school and to my locker. I threw my things in and grabbed what I needed for class. I ran down the hallway and slipped into my first class just as the bell rang. Lucky for me the teacher didn’t notice but my totally awesome and hot girlfriend did. She looked over at me and winked. I grinned back at her and nodded. The teacher turned his back from the white board. His eyes scanned the classroom. I waited until he started with his lecture before laying my head down on the desk and drifting off to sleep. The next thing I heard was the sound of a hand landing on my desk. I jumped out of my skin! I blurted out an answer and the entire room was filled with laughter. I looked up and sheepishly smiled at my teacher. He didn’t find it as funny as everyone else did. He turned back to the white board and wrote out the homework. I copied it down and then packed up my things as the bell rang. I walked over to my girlfriend’s desk and waited. She put her things away and stood up slinging her backpack around her shoulder. The two of us walked out of the classroom and I wrapped my arm around her waist.

So when are you getting your driver’s license again Zeke? she asked.

Two more weeks Katie, I smiled at her. I can’t wait! It’s going to be a blast.

What are we going to do first? she asked.

First? Hmm? I grinned. Well I’ve always wanted to check out that hot make out spot by the lake.

Oh! she giggled. I would love that.
