Danny felt excited as he passed a large road sign that read Welcome to Carterville.
This would be where he could get a fresh start in life. He had been driving several hours without stopping, and his arms and legs had become stiff. The rows of trees lining the road were beautiful shades of green and a welcome sight after driving hours over empty roads. His jeans and t-shirt smelled stale from having been worn for multiple days, and his hair fell unkempt across his forehead. Danny hadn’t bothered to get ready when he’d left his motel early that morning. He was anxious to be done with his exodus and leave his painful and horrific past behind to start a new life. His stomach grumbled, reminding him it had been several hours since he had eaten.
Carterville was a quaint, peaceful little town where planter boxes hung from old-fashioned light posts lining the main road, filled with vibrantly colored flowers, and mom-and-pop stores with hand-painted, wooden signs lined the sidewalks. It was certainly different from the hustle and bustle Danny had been used to back in New York City.
Danny continued on the main road, leading to the center of town, where he pulled his old Ford Bronco over to the side of the road in front of one of the shops. I’m finally here,
he said to himself out loud, Time to find something to eat.
His stomach growled again in agreement as he got out of his truck and stretched.
Long drive, huh?
said an unfamiliar voice from behind him.
Danny whipped around to see a tall, burly police officer wearing a tan uniform and cowboy hat. Light reflected off his aviator sunglasses, and he had a well-groomed goatee.

Danny stuttered. His heart raced. He had not expected his first interaction in town to be with law enforcement. Panicked thoughts raced through his mind. Had the local authorities been notified he was coming? Did they know about his
