    Chapter 1

Danny sat on the edge of the front porch, staring at the charred shell that used to be his Bronco. He listened to the rattling engine of the firetruck as the ashes crackled, still unable to believe his Bronco was gone.

He turned his head to look at Buck and Bethany, talking to the officers who had arrived on the scene, silhouetted by the flashing lights of the nearby patrol car. There was a soft hand on his shoulder, and Kelsey sat next to him.

Whoa—hold your horses there. That’s not going to solve anything, Buck said.

Danny wrenched his hand away, scowled, and dropped the rock. This is all ludicrous.

I know you’re upset, Danny, but now is not the time to lose our heads. There’s some serious stuff going on here, Buck said.

You’re telling me, Danny said bitterly.

Please, just listen to Buck for a moment, Bethany said, trying to calm Danny down.

Look, I just finished talking to the officers and the fire chief, Buck said. "They confirmed this wasn’t just some accident. It looks like foul play.
