PREFACE
Why I Play Chess
My wife and I raised our two children, and they graduated from high school and then went to college. After our youngest went away to college, there was a significant amount of time in the evenings that I could spend, so I thought about various productive projects because time is the most valuable item that humans possess.
A Masonic Lodge asked me to dinner, and I knew on my first visit that I wanted to be a Freemason because Freemasonry was the perfect benevolent project for me to spend my time. Self-improvement and making the world a better place was much more of a prudent choice than spending my evenings playing video games or watching sports.
When COVID-19 hit, my Masonic Lodge no longer met in person in the evenings, so I was once again forced to determine the most prudent way to spend my time. Chess was the answer. I joined Chess.com in the first week of October in 2020, and a few days later, the TV series Queen’s Gambit aired. I took many lessons and played many games on Chess.com. Then, in January 2021, I joined the Chess Club & Scholastic Center of Atlanta.
On one of my Google searches for chess,
I discovered the MasterClass series, which provides education from legendary titans and all-time greats in specific industries and fields. Since I grew up with Garry Kasparov, I sought his chess instruction and coaching. As a birthday gift to myself, I took my first MasterClass lesson in chess from Garry Kasparov on February 21, 2021.
Why I Wrote This Book
