Why Learn a Foreign Language?
Learning a foreign language is a challenging endeavor, but it is a rewarding one. We have devices that translate languages for us automatically, but they just aren’t the same as actually knowing how to speak another language and they do make mistakes, because a device doesn’t take the context of a conversation into account. Electronic translators don’t strengthen your brain in the same way as taking the time to learn another language. And if you deal with a traumatic brain injury (like myself), you might have been advised to stay away from screens. Learning a new language by yourself is a healthy way to rewire your brain though.
I am suggesting a variety of activities and methods to learn a new language—all of which I have tried myself. Some may not work as well for you as others. Something I can guarantee though, is that staying with the language lesson books won’t work. Those are great for learning some basics, but you need to put them into practice in order to really improve your skill level. The speed at which you will learn is based on the effort you put into it, how much you enjoy it, and how often you use it.
Are you ready to challenge and strengthen your brain and enter the exciting world of learning another language? Then stick with me. Here we go...
