Xian stuck her hands on her hips. "What is so amusing?"  

 

"You," said Zune, "and your gentle heart. Twenty-three years in the ruins," she went on, ignoring it when Xian blushed, "and you never let life here harden you, even after the robots killed your family, even after all you have suffered, you didn't let it make you distant and cold. . . Like me."  

 

Xian was still blushing hard but looked Zune directly in the eye as she said, "You are not cold! No one ever . . . k-kissed me the way you have."   

 

It was Zune's turn to be embarrassed.

"No," said Zune at once. She was sitting with her knees wide, her elbows resting on them as she leaned toward the fire, and Xian thought the position made her seem broody and grim. "It is my job to protect people. If Micro were being attacked by a giant Xubertron, I'd gladly step in. But instead, we are running errands, fetching a battery from across the sector, and putting you at great risk by--" 

 

Xian suddenly kissed Zune. She couldn't help it: Zune was so cute when she was worried about her.

Blue eyes softening, Zune knelt before Xian, hesitated, and touched her cheek. It was warm. So warm. So many parts of Zune were icy metal, she had nearly forgotten what it felt like, the warmth of skin. Even the parts of her that were still human flesh had a cold layer beneath that was unpleasant, stiff. Xian was the first woman she had touched in one thousand years, and doing so always left an ache in her.

Xian lay on her back in the nest of her discarded clothes. Zune hadn’t undressed her all the way, of course, as that would have been too dangerous. She was still wearing her long cargo skirt and boots, but her button-down shirt and military jacket lay open around her shoulders, and her bra had been pulled up, so that her small breasts stood against the air, heaving slightly with her nervous breath.

The rest of Xian was small as well. Her long blonde hair was a ragged mess, and her green eyes were often frightened. This time, however, her eyes were only nervous and a little eager.

Zune lay beside Xian, leaning on one elbow as she gazed down at her with gentle blue eyes. She was muscle-bound and tall, with dark hair and a face that was typically cold and serious. And she was a cyborg, possibly the most dangerous type of cyborg in Eazon, for she wasn’t a petty chief of a raider clan. Zune was a thousand-year-old soldier and a remnant of the war.

Xian’s parents had always told her never to trust cyborgs, and now here she was, on a rooftop, having sex with one! No doubt her parents were rolling in their graves, her sister as well.

Xian, said Zune softly.

Xian looked up. She had come to love it, the way Zune spoke her name with the accent of her time. She always put such emphasis on the X and the I.

We can stop if you’re uncomfortable, Zune said.

No, no! Xian said quickly. She reached up and touched Zune’s face. Make love to me! she whispered breathlessly.
