Captain Cleo’s ship was known as the Peregrine and was as large and beautiful as the Queen Bull . As Wilhelmina was carried onboard – still dangling helplessly over the captain’s shoulder – she couldn’t help looking at the ship in awe, however grudgingly.

Time to get underway, you louts! Captain Cleo shouted as she stomped across the deck. Make way there! Make way! She elbowed a pirate (who had been standing there gaping at Wilhelmina) viciously in the face, and the pirate tripped aside, face gushing blood.

Wilhelmina could see the distant fires blazing in Hardoc Town. Vera’s women had stormed through the place, setting everything aflame with torches. People were still running and screaming as the pirates of the Queen Bull pillaged them dry. She could see Cleo’s women, meanwhile, retreating in defeat aboard the Peregrine. They were being told to pull back by a muscular woman with ragged black hair and a scar across her chin. The woman stood at the railing of the ship, bellowing down the gangplank, Cap’n says retreat, you lunks! Retreat!

Get this bloody ship moving! snarled Captain Cleo as the crew scurried. "I’ve taken that bitch Vera’s ship wife, and she’ll be on us inna flash for this ripe pussy!" So saying, she gave Wilhelmina’s backside a hard clap that made her squeal.

Hearty chuckles from the crew as Wilhelmina glared at them all.

Captain Cleo stomped toward the captain’s cabin in the aft, but instead of going through the door, she set Wilhelmina hard on her feet and turned to face the woman with the scar on her chin, who had followed.

Is the crew all aboard, Scabs? said Captain Cleo, who was keeping a tight hand on Wilhelmina’s upper arm but was not even looking at her.

Wilhelmina stood there, feeling like a sack of gold coins Cleo had absently set down. It was like she wasn’t even a person. She wanted to wiggle free of the big woman’s grasp but resisted the urge. She knew there would be consequences if she did.

The woman with the scar on her chin – the apparent Scabs – nodded breathlessly. Aye, Cap’n. We’re ready to get underway. Her eyes went to Wilhelmina, who stiffened. We could have fled and Vera wouldn’t have pursued, except you took her woman. Why?

Cleo’s eyes narrowed. You may be first mate, Scabs, but don’t you go forgettin’ yer place.

Scabs heaved an impatient breath and her stiff, small breasts heaved. Cap’n, it was a bad idea to take the woman! Vera is possessive about her women, ye know that. Remember what happened with Jackie—

To blazes with Jackie! Captain Cleo roared, so loudly that Wilhelmina cringed from her in horror.

Scabs took another frustrated breath, tightened her lips, and glared at Wilhelmina, as if it were her fault. Wilhelmina stared back brazenly, and Scabs looked down at her in surprise.

I was never going to hold Hardoc so long as that bitch was set on havin’ it, snarled Captain Cleo. She’s a pirate queen for a reason, ya dolt. So I took a consolation prize. We’ll set forth and find more bilge rats willin’ to serve, then we’ll return with a strong force and lay waste to her!
