Reyna shivered as she pressed her foot harder onto the gas. The two-hour drive back to Salem should be easy enough but being alone with her thoughts was the issue. Juan Palau, her awful boyfriend, filtered into her mind. After months of dealing with his abuse, she’d taken her life into her own hands and decided to run back home. A place she never told him about. Not even before she realized his true nature.

Even now, she couldn’t figure out if the shock she’d first felt when she touched him was manufactured or not. Hell, she wouldn’t put it past Juan to have some kind of machine to mimic a werewolf imprint…That would be really bad for wolves all around the world if it was possible. Her wolf growled low at the thought. She’d spent so long thinking he was her mate, but she was done.

I deserve better. She nodded a few times then his sweet moments filtered in, making her heart ache. But every time he showed her he might actually have a heart, he’d show her how wrong she was.

The last beating filtered into her mind. He’d been pacing between hits like he was waiting for something to happen. Even now, she didn’t know what it might be. But it didn’t matter anymore because she’d left the son of a bitch the next morning. Quit her job on the way out of town without looking back…much.

I’m free of him, she muttered as the even more painful memories of the miscarriage settled into the back of her head. It was for the best. A sob broke out, and she continued down I-25.

Her wolf paced back and forth as Reyna put more distance between her and Juan. The more miles to separate them the better. Even being on birth control, she’d somehow slipped up and gotten pregnant but didn’t tell him. Her whole being felt broken into a million pieces.

She kept sobbing as her phone buzzed. It sat in a holder on her dash, giving her a view of the screen while also keeping an eye on the road. Cadoc, one of the alpha twins, was messaging her about how she’s coming back home.

Cadoc and Declan run the Salem, New Mexico, pack together, being twins and all. The two were so similar that most couldn’t tell the difference unless you could smell them. Their scents while holding the alpha tint were different in a few ways. Cadoc was more burning firewood while Declan reminded her of leather.

The last time she saw both of them, she was moving up to Albuquerque to live with Juan. A horrible mistake she wasn’t aware of at the time, but she couldn’t go back to the past. Even if leaving her hometown was the worst mistake of her life.

Her wolf pushed thoughts of Cadoc into her head and the way he’d reached out to her when she drove off. Like he’d wanted to say something but didn’t get a chance.

Oh, stop it. She huffed at her wolf and hit the gas pedal harder, passing a few stragglers.

Once she passed the slower cars, she messaged Cadoc about being there soon. She planned to go straight to Melissa’s house, her new home until she landed on her feet. Melissa was her best friend in the whole world and an amazing set of ears to listen to all her problems.

Another buzz pulled her focus to her phone, and she turned down the music so her wolf could listen to the light traffic around her. She’d kept her number but blocked Juan from calling or even texting her. At least that’s what the customer support guy said when she was worried about him tracking her down.

Cadoc: Come over first so you can rejoin the pack. No fucking putting it off.

Reyna growled and it vibrated the window next to her. If the alpha ordered it, she would have to listen without question. Alphas had that command in their territory and coming back, Reyna would have to remember to obey him. Back in Albuquerque, the alpha was mated with two kids almost out of their teenage years. Not to mention the city was larger than Salem, so he had lots to deal with, unlike Cadoc and Declan.

She typed a few choice words like as you fucking wish dick, or fuck off and screw yourself, but she deleted all of it before typing out her actual message.
