Sold to Jupiter - McKayla Schutt

    CHAPTER ONE

    Phoebe

Phoebe held her breath as one of the guards passed her down the main road. The king would be coming soon with his horde of guards, all seemed pointless, as the man was twice as large as any of his guards. It seemed to be a ritual because she’d seen the king every day since she arrived. His green dragon eyes appeared when the king was pissed off. She wouldn’t utter the words aloud, but she found him downright sexy as sin with his freaking green skin all taunt over thick muscles. Her middle quivered thinking about him, but she pulled herself back to reality as she stood in one of the shops outside. He would need a shifter, not a human.

She sighed and pressed her bag into her chest. Her feet inched back. The first wave of guards passed her, and Phoebe lifted her gaze slightly as those ice-blue eyes locked with hers. The orbs changed to green for a few seconds. The breath left her lungs as he headed right for her. Oh fuck, why is he coming my way!

Really, Sire. Now? The voice made the king pause, then he glared at a male. King Alpha, in all black, completely overshadowed the other male next to him in both strength and build.

Good morning. The king extended his hand to Phoebe, and she looked down, debating if she should actually take it. It is good manners to give back a greeting, he whispered.

Right. She cleared her throat. Morning. I’m Phoebe. She slowly pulled one hand from her bag and shook his hand. I thought I’d managed to get out of the way of the whole row of bodyguards. She swallowed hard, keeping her gaze down. Hoping with all her being that he’d forgive her for possibly getting in the way. So many new customs to get used to on Jupiter, she felt like a penguin in the jungle.

King Alpha Rodrick. How new are you to Jupiter? He leaned in closer. Hints of his oak scent filled her nose, sending desire down her spine. She gulped, trying to keep herself focused and grounded.

I’ve been here three days, Sir. Ah yes, three days of adjustment and a need to find a good job so they didn’t find her pathetic or wasteful. Since her birth, she’d been sold to Jupiter. Earth had some kind of system deciding on who goes where and who will stay on Earth to become a breeder. Jupiter paid to raise her on earth with her family, but at twenty-one, they shipped her off to live on Jupiter. Someone had set her up with food for a week; at least, that was their intent. However, Phoebe was a fat kid at heart with a large family of males who loved to steal most of her food. So, she had about a day at best before she was on reserves.

Go along, I’ll catch up. He motioned to most of the guard, but the guy who’d spoken earlier stayed firm in his stance.

I’ll wait. He glared at Phoebe, and she inched back, sensing his irritated beast below. Her ass hit a table, and she turned.

Sorry. She refocused on the king and his guy. Look, am I in trouble? She rubbed her lips together and looked at him.

Should you be? He arched his brow, and she adjusted her hair.

Nope. Her lips popped on the P, and his eyes zoned in on her mouth. Heat rose up her body, and images of him pressing her against a wall then taking control made her center ache with need. Yes, she’d kissed boys and men, but part of being sold was you couldn’t get pregnant, and Phoebe didn’t want to risk it.

Would you like to accompany me to dinner? He extended his hand, and she stared at his palm for a moment.

Why me? she asked before she could stop herself. Then he laughed, and it rolled through the whole walkway. She almost laughed with him, his freaking chuckle was contagious. Everyone seemed to be staring at them, and she wanted to pull her hair forward to block her face.

What, no one’s ever told you you’re beautiful? There was a hint of a challenge in his voice like it would make a huge difference what she said next.

A few boys said it, but they uttered the word to everyone with a vagina. She shrugged. The memory of her mother flitted through her mind. She liked to say in one way or another, count yourself blessed that you will have a better life than me.

Then it’s settled. You’ll join me for dinner in one hour. He grabbed her hand and kissed the top before walking away with his friend. She stared after him until she lost him in the crowd as it filtered back into normal business now that he had gone.

What the fuck just happened? She shoved her hair back, and the shopkeeper chuckled. What? she snapped at him.

Looks like the king wants a new mistress. He eyed her. You do, after all, have a cherry to pop, I presume.

That’s none of your damn business, she hissed while pointing her finger at the guy. I wasn’t a whore on Earth, and I won’t start here on Jupiter. She growled low. Yes, I growled at a shifter... that wasn’t the best move. But, before he could do anything, an alarm echoed around the area.

She looked up to see the sky turn a lime green shade that was totally different than normal. In a sudden dash, everyone raced to pack up their belongings. The guy didn’t give her a second glance as he rushed to collect his odd fruit.

Phoebe backed up and passed the row of shops, every owner zipped around like a bunch of bees.

What’s going on? she asked a gal running down the street.

Hurricane Red is coming, she yelled, and Phoebe’s heart dropped. Her mind raced, trying to remember what they said to do if the damn red dot of death headed into town. She twisted and almost ran into a guard.

Are you Phoebe? His voice was low, almost lost under the siren.

    She swallowed hard. Yes.

Come with me. He shifted his weight and then headed toward an alleyway. Come on. He motioned to her, and she gave in and followed the guard. They slid down a few alleys and stopped at a large gate. She glanced right and left. The right had nothing but miles of fencing while the left had a building between the fencing. The stone walls and beefy structure seemed ten times larger than any building she’d ever seen on earth. This place had nothing feminine about it with all dark colors and pulsed power.

Where are we? she yelled, and the wind from the south picked up. She’d seen the place in pictures, but
