Sold to Neptune - McKayla Schutt

    CHAPTER ONE

    Henna

    image-placeholder

Henna checked around after the other women were escorted to their homes by guards. Her heart raced in her ears making it hard to focus on the task at hand. She was the last one and had lingered on purpose because she had a secret passenger hidden in her bags. One more final check with a light snow fall making it hard for her human eyes to see anyone. No one was there so she slid down the steps and reached for her bag.

I think we’re clear for you. Are you okay? During the trip, Henna had checked on her twin sister while the other passengers slept. She didn’t know any of the other women but most seemed excited to be sold to Neptune. A chill rolled down her spine, this place was so freaking cold that her jacket was barely helping her to stay warm. Gritting her teeth she rubbed her hands together trying to get her fingers un numb so she could work the zipper faster.

As a newborn, Neptune bought Henna and sent money to feed her but didn’t buy or feed her twin sister. Kenna was meant to stay on Earth to become a breeder. While growing up, Henna shared all her stuff with her twin. Anything purchased for her, would go half to her and half to her younger twin. They made it work with four older brothers. Most of the state funds went to the brothers and none to her twin. In theory she would get tons of funds to grow up with, but Earth treasured the males more than females.

Yes, just cold as sin. Get me out of here, Kenna hissed through the small openings. Henna reached for the zipper but froze in place when the echo of footsteps sounded behind her.

She turned quickly, her heart racing in her chest so fast it made it difficult to breathe. Henna wasn’t used to the cold weather. She may have been born in the north where the cold weather resided on Earth, but she had moved when she was just seven years old.

Now her home was on the planet of Neptune, a planet known for it’s major snowstorms. Henna adjusted her jacket while blocking the large bag where her sister was still hiding.

Good afternoon, I’m Shadow and I’ll be escorting you to your new home. We have a vehicle to help make it easier to travel. He smiled and his arms swayed at his sides. Even his shoulders weren’t tense.

Ah wonderful. Henna shifted her weight. I’ll grab this bag. Henna didn’t want to risk him sniffing out her sister.

Her sister was in a bag with wheels, but the deep snow would make it difficult to maneuver. Then again, she couldn’t risk the guard catching her sister either. She needed to get Kenna into the house and hidden for a week or two. By then the news of a stowaway would be old and no one would really be looking for her.

All right. Shadow reached for the bag next to the large one and froze. His nose flared and Henna’s heart leapt into her throat. He glanced back at her before moving to the large bag.

No, it’s all right. I really got… Words failed her as he grabbed the zipper and slid it open. Kenna’s face appeared, all the color gone from her cheeks.

Why are you in a bag? His brow arched. Kenna slowly stood, packing peanuts stuck to her coat. She tried to brush them off but a few still clung to the fabric because of the static.

I… Kenna opened her mouth then glanced at Henna. I was cold, while looking for my jacket. My sister suggested that I climb in to stay warm until we could find it. She offered a half smile but it didn’t meet her eyes. Henna bit at her dry lips as she eyed the guard. His nose flared as Henna’s heart stopped for a second. Shifters, at least most of them were able to sniff out lies but Henna had no idea if Kenna knew this part of the shifter history. After all Henna was the one sold, she’d learned all the customs and such as a child in school, but did her twin learn the same in her side of the school? Henna doubted it very much, especially in this moment.

What’s your name? He grabbed a tablet from his back pocket, the screen lit up and the list of women who should be on the ship were displayed. Henna glanced on it, seeing her own name but not her sisters. Even a red alert at the top of the list. Henna thought about knocking the guy out and grabbing her sister to start running. But the thought passed as Kenna shivered. Her twin wouldn’t survive in the snow without a proper coat.

I’m Kenna. She rubbed her lips together. Henna bolted to her side and Shadow glanced between them like he finally saw the similarities between the twin sisters.

And you? His eyes narrowed on Henna, the true sold woman to this planet.

Henna. She gulped, her feet ready to run even though she didn’t know where she could hide on this planet. Maybe I can get the coat off him and that would keep Kenna safe until they found a place to hide.

Shadow pulled out a radio. I need some back up here at the landing zone. We have a situation.

I should run for it, Kenna hissed and dragged Henna at her side a few feet before Shadow blocked their paths. He shook his head and his whole body was tense, like he was fighting off a shift here in the snow. Henna couldn’t tell what kind of shifter he was by looking at him, but the way his nose kept flaring she guessed he’d be a good tracker. Knowing their scent true right here, he’d probably track them down anywhere they tried to hide. Damn it! Henna wanted to scream, plead with Shadow to just let them go.

"Don’t even think about it. If you get lost in the light storm you will
