    ––––––––

Nervous tension rolled through Orlana’s blood as she inched down a road on Venus. Her first steps on the planet were both exhilarating and nerve-wracking at the same time. Leaving Earth gave her the best chance at a good life. Back on Earth, women were either sold or a breeder to produce more men. Breeders were treated like cattle with the task of making more males for Earth to balance the population.

Orlana took in everything around her. All the houses were similar in the cottage style from Earth and had a path to the front door from the street. The guard next to her adjusted the bag he’d offered to carry for Orlana when she climbed down the steps of the shuttle.

Here’s your new home. He waved to the house on a corner with flowers covering the ground, and a blue door brought her some peace for a second. Then the guard dropped the bag off at the front door and walked away, leaving her alone for the first time in days.

On the eve of her departure from Earth, she’d run off and sank into a flower field to get away from the family. Her sister was never sold to the planets like Orlana, but Jessie didn’t mind staying and becoming a breeder. Or at least that’s what Jessi said before Orlana had left for Venus.

Many decades ago, when Venus was hot, toxic, and rained acid making it unhabitable. But when the shifter war ended, the dragons and other shifters helped terraform the close planets so humans could live on them, only Pluto was unhabitable since it was way too freaking cold, even for the dragons.

Orlana grabbed her bag and scooted it into the house. Her new home had a couch in the living room next to the door, a kitchen with bright green countertops and blue cabinets, swirled like a galaxy painting. She set her belongings next to the couch and meandered through her place. Her hands slid over the smooth countertop then dipped into the granite sink and onto a silver fridge. The kitchen was connected to a laundry room and the backyard, which was completely bare dirt. Not a spec of grass in sight but some lawns had moss which helped the planet produce oxygen. The simple layout settled her nerves a little. Here, she’d start her new life.

Soon, I’ll get my garden going and be close to the new nature here. She smiled to herself and walked back through the kitchen and turned down a hallway with four doors. The first one had a bathroom with a large shower but no bath. She sighed and planned on changing that soon because, once a month, she enjoyed taking baths to refresh herself and ease the tension in her muscles. The hotter the better.

The next door had a closet of shelves with towels and sheets all stacked neatly. Interesting. She nodded then closed the door before heading down the rest of the hallway. She opened both then scanned the rooms. One was small with a desk, and the other had a bed with soft blue sheets and a black comforter folded on the end of the bed.

This is nice, but I need a shower. Her trip seemed longer than it should’ve been, so Orlana sauntered back and secured her shower items then skipped back to the bathroom. She’d have to use her stuff sparingly until she found more of her favorites here on Venus.

When she pulled the curtain back, she paused as she took in the five levers. She swallowed hard, and tentatively reached in and twisted one. A gush of purple foam puffed out of the showerhead on the far side of the shower.

How many heads does this thing have? She hissed and turned it off. Three were visible through the thick foam still puffing out and falling to the ground. She twisted another and water spurted out of the closest showerhead, but it was ice cold. Yikes! No way! Another knob sent blue foam into the water, mixing, and smelled like blueberries. This is so freaking odd. She twisted the fourth and the water heated up slightly, but not hot enough. Yet she couldn’t remember which one was the cold water.

Pondering her options, she jumped in and took the fastest cold shower she’d ever taken in her twenty-one years of life. At birth, she’d been sold to Venus in a planet alliance with Earth. Each planet with shifters purchased food and clothing for a group of females to be raised on Earth. Once she’d turned twenty-one, she was shuffled off like she had some illness.

Orlana jumped out and cursed. She’d completely forgotten her towel, so as quick as possible, she slid out of the bathroom and secured a one around her body. Warmth filtered back to her skin, keeping away the shivers she expected. She walked over to her bag and grabbed out a dress, black and flowy in a gentle breeze.

Yes, this will work. She dragged a pair of panties on before the dress, then stood tall in her home. Her few tarot and oracle decks caught her sight, and she drew them out and strolled back to the room with the desk. She pulled out her favorite desk and shuffled, thinking about her new home and the new beginnings coming her way.

After a few minutes, she set the cards out and in the Celtic cross she’d learned as a teenager then flipped the first card. Page of Cups stared back at her, but it was freaking upside down and she tipped her head to the side. But I’m not ignoring my intuition and psychic gifts.

Her lips scrunched together as she flipped the next card, showing The Sun, which was a good omen in a reading, now that she lived even closer to the sun on Venus. Relaxation rolled through her body as she flipped the next card, King of Wands, and she tipped her head. Maybe it is time to set my sights on a man. She mused about what kind of man was symbolized here. Card four revealed Two of Wands, which meant partial success, which gave her pause because the card didn’t come up often.

Last one. She flipped it and froze as she stared at the Six of Cups, upside down. Unhappy memories of her days on Earth filtered in and she sighed. I’m not going to be stuck in the past. She collected her cards and found a good spot next to the window before going back to her bag and unpacking a pair of shoes so she could look at her back yard before emptying her things.

When she stepped outside, a buzz hummed under her skin, but she ignored it. Probably nerves for living on a new planet. She pushed it down and soaked in the warm sun. Here, she was free
