DHYAN - YOGA
(Meditative Yoga)
Which amount of practice is required to suit an individual?
Is ‘Art’ meant for the sake of ‘Art’ or for the life? This burning question often arises in the fields of literature and Art. Subsequent lines will unravel the details on these facets.
A common man believes that ‘Dhyan Yoga’ is beyond his reach because if, a person plunges himself into this discipline, he has to abandon his family, livelihood and business. This conceptual approach of a common man has confined this field exclusively to the (more) accomplished persons, hence it could not find favour or acceptance with a common man, due to its non-utilisation for the benefit of a common man.
Misconceptions about Dhvan-Yoga
Fables, contained in the ‘Puranas’, are responsible for such misconception. According to such fables an ascetic’s body was reduced to a mere skeleton, because he stood upon his one leg, and a yogi’s head was manifested by an ant-hill. Such negative results resulted in dividing our society into two segments, such as ‘Yogi’ and ‘Bhogi’ Ascetics or households, and there was no interaction between both.
Now-a-days people in the western world are taking increasing interest in ‘Yoga’, due to which the so-called modern people have taken fancy to ‘Yoga’ means only the ‘Asanas’ (Physical Postures), whereas the fact remains that ‘Asana’ is only a part of yoga. Main purpose of Dhyana-Yoga is to make a person conscious about various attributes and functions of mind. Yoga has variable stages-from the most common to the highest stage. If yoga is practised in an ordinary way, it helps to enhance our efficiency in the performance of our daily chores while practice in higher stages of yoga, will help to forge towards disinclination from daily routine duties—such ordinary and specific distinctions govern all the facets of our daily life.
Let us take examples from a play ground. Running, Jumping, leaping, springing and swimming are the sort of physical activities (exercises) which keep our body healthy, and such exercises do not interfere with a player’s daily routine work. But for the players, who wish to attain proficiency and speciality in a specific sport or wish to participate in national and international sports, events and competitions physical exercise is a means to earn name and fame, and they do not regard such activities only to keep their bodies healthy.
High class dedication & hard work is needed in each field to attain success
In order to attain a high position in any field, an aspirant is required to comply with related rules of a particular discipline; in which he wishes to attain proficient speciality. It is the ‘Guru’ say coach in this contest, who guides about dynamics and secrets about a specific speciality. He will also chart out suitable food patterns and related exercises, required to meet the requisites of a game. For instance different types of diet and exercise are required to be adhered to participate in races and swimming. Coaching camps are held to train the aspirants. If we closely look at such camps they resemble like sacred groves (‘Tapovan’), residential environmental conditions exist at both the places. Since the objective behind both he facets is different, we can easily discern the difference in approach and practice.
Is ‘Dhyana’ mean for life or life is mean for ‘Dhyana’?
When we refer to the term ‘Life’ for Dhyana’ our objective (import) is to point to the highest stage of Dhyana-Yoga-it is condition where the yogi unifies with absolute Brahma, (ultimate and supreme reality), but such a state cannot be attained without accomplishing yoga and turning our life towards it.
When we refer to the term ‘Dhyana for life’ the practical aspect of life superveness. So, Dhyana-Yoga is a mental exercise which helps to make our life successful and happy.
Advantages of Dhyan-Yoga
A person, who until now had been unaware of unbound power of mind, would certainly want to know what is the advantage of mental exercise(s).
It is a natural desire to know as to which benefits we will derive from what we are doing now or wish to do. No doubt, there are many books which guide about the advantages of the next world, but a common man desires to derive instant gains and results. He is more inspired by a small but instant gains than the gain he will derive from a long-term practice.
Instant gain from Dhyan-Yoga is, if we are more attentive on our work, we can perform with better efficiency. All the successful persons, whether they belong to the field of art, science or any other discipline, were successful due to their concentration, and herein lies the secret of their success.
Types of Concentration
Concentration is of two types, viz.
1. Natural or Intuitive (SAHAJ)
2. Acquired (‘ARJIT’)
Our concentration is natural, when it is concerned with the affairs and persons in whom we are interested and fascinated. If motive of our concentration is not society oriented, then we have to bear the brunt in one form or the other-it could either be a punishment from the state or the society, but in either case our honour will get adversely impacted.
Hence dependence, solely upon natural concentration, will not suffice. So, a suitable device has to be devised, by which we could concentrate on our desired object, through our will power, and such type of concentration will be called as an acquired concentration. Yoga suggests us the method to concentrate.
Another advantage of Dhyan-Yoga
Peaceful state of mind is another achievement of yoga. State of mental peace holds an important position in our life. For instance, all of our decisions, taken in a peaceful state of mind, will be discreet and right, because a person, with a tranquil mind acquires a natural power to win over his confusions. A tranquil person is less restive and his life is stable (not vacillating). He will not be nervous under odd situations. But, if the results are inconsistent with the amount of efforts put in and also not upto his expectations, he will not lose his cool nor get disturbed or depressed.
Peaceful state and concentration are reciprocally dependent on each other. A concentrated mind will automatically gain peace but, we fail to concentrate, when we are mentally disturbed. If we are able to concentrate our mind on any subject, it clearly indicates that we have achieved our aim through peaceful state of mind.
‘Samadhi’ is the ultimate stage of concentration, and Yoga scholars have suggested methods to reach the stage of ‘Samadhi’. But, here we are discussing Dhyana-Yoga only in relation to a person who leads a normal way of life, which, invariably, refers to the state of a peaceful mind. There are many methods to acquire peace of mind, but here only some of the relevant methods will be explained in subsequent chapters.

How could Mind be Freed From Pollution?
This Question was replied to, in 1986, by the author ‘In Vishwa Yoga Sammelan’ during the course of his speech. Some excerpts of the speech are reproduced in this chapter.
Pollution is a subject of hot discussion these days. There are various factors which trigger pollution and add to its virulent ill effects, such as toxic smoke emitted by cars, buses and factories. Problem of pollution is further compounded by discharging fillty and residual matters and waste material into the rivers. Third type of pollution pertains to noise pollution. By the term ‘Noise’ is implied incoherent and disorderly voices. The scientists maintain that, when noise rises beyond, ascertain permissible levels it causes tension and makes a person agitate and snobbish.
Indian government has assigned the job, of controlling pollution and making environment
