Chapter One: The Time is Now
You are a few clicks away from whatever you need. Thanks to technological advancement and the growth of the internet, finding goods and services does not need to have you walking around town for hours on end. You can even purchase from other countries while in the comfort of your home.
Life is busy, we are all hustling and bustling and if there is a commodity that is in short supply; it is time. Besides, no one wants to be stuck in traffic for hours on end. With the world moving so fast and everyone looking for ease and convenience, there is no better time to venture into an e-commerce business like now. The concept of online business has been tried and tested and found to be working. Yet, it is not saturated.
The US Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce reported that in 2021, the retail e-commerce sales were $211.7 b, a 7.6% increase from the year's first quarter. Interestingly, these sales only accounted for 12.5% of the total sales. In essence, the retail e-commerce business is only slightly over 12% meaning that the potential for growth is quite high.
The Bricks and Mortar Store
Brick and mortar is not actually something made out of brick and mortar, although sometimes that may be the case. What the term refers to is a business model that operates offline, involves a business with a physical presence, and offers customers a face-to-face experience.
For many centuries, stores were all physical and the thought of having one that did not physically exist was foreign. Today, these physical stores still exist but of course they have evolved with time. If you walk around in town and especially in the malls, you will find many of the businesses have physical stores, what we call brick and mortar stores. Running such a business comes with various advantages like attracting potential customers through their senses. For example, if it is a bakery, the smell of freshly baked bread and the sight of those chocolate-covered donuts could be the ideal selling point. There are also many people who still prefer to touch and feel items and have face-to-face engagements with the sales representatives.
However, the brick and mortar businesses have slowly been deteriorating for various reasons.
● Rent - Not unless you own the building, getting commercial space is not an easy task and when you do so, it is not cheap. Rent for commercial purposes can range from $12-$40 per square foot but could even go higher depending on the location. There is also the issue of contracts that leave you bound for a certain period of time even if your business goes down.
● Employee management and costs - Running a physical store requires employees to perform such tasks as cleaning, ringing up sales, and stock inventory among others. There will be payroll and benefits like dental and medical care and all these are costs incurred by the business that eat into the profits. There is also the issue of managing your employees which takes time and energy such as dealing with sickness and other absences.
● Start-up and overhead cost - Starting a business requires proper planning but getting a brick and mortar business off the ground needs substantial monetary investment. Aside from the rent, you require business insurance, utilities, and workspace design among others. If you choose to go for a franchise, it can cost you quite a fortune.
● Limited customers - Running a purely physical store limits your potential customers to only those who can access your location. The rest of the people have no access to your products and services. If you aim to serve only your locality then this kind of arrangement can work for you. However, if your aim is to serve a wider population, you will need many different locations which are also expensive.
● Inconvenience - A good number of people prefer to shop online for the convenience of it.
