    Insights from Chapter 1

    #1

The police dispatcher passed Adam over to the fire dispatcher, who needed an address to send paramedics. When the police arrived at the house, they found the body of a woman in her early thirties, lying on the grass next to a brick walkway between the main house and the guest house.

    Insights from Chapter 2

    #1

On July 11, 2011, Jonah joined his kids at the Spreckels Mansion, where they were all going to the beach. Max loved his scooter, a gift from his mother and aunt. But Jonah never liked the scooter and took it away from him.

    #2

About 20 minutes after the incident, Ariel was getting dressed for the beach when she heard Rebecca screaming downstairs. Max was lying in an alcove near the bottom of the stairs, surrounded by a mess of shattered glass from the broken chandelier.

    #3

When police arrived at the mansion, they heard a woman screaming from inside. They located the victim lying on his back beneath the staircase, with his feet facing the wall, his head pointing toward the front door, and a Razor scooter across his right shin.

    #4

After the accident, Jonah rushed home and saw a police car outside his house. He was told that his son had been taken to the hospital, but he didn’t know what had happened.

    #5

When the ambulance took off, psychologist Karen Hancock followed officer Robert Kline into the mansion. She found Rebecca on the couch with her sister, tearful and shaking, but not depressed or suicidal.

    #6

As the two were cleaning up the broken chandelier, a sharp point poked through and pierced Ariel’s leg. They took her to Coronado Bay Urgent Care, which was actually off the island and farther south in Imperial Beach.

    #7

Max had a skull fracture, and he was transferred to Rady Children’s Hospital, which offered more cutting-edge treatment for pediatric traumas and head injuries. As Jonah rode with them, he texted his best friend of sixteen years, who was also Max’s godfather.

    #8

When Dina got to the hospital, she was shocked to see Max hooked up to a ventilator, with tubes coming out of his nose and mouth, bruises across his forehead, up the center of his back, and around his right eye. She thought he would get through it.

    Insights from Chapter 3

    #1

While trying to help his daughter, Jonah didn’t want to bring her dog, Ocean, to the kennel in Coronado because he was afraid of exposing him to other dogs. He eventually agreed to take him to his vet in Arizona the next day, and keep him isolated until the medicine kicked in.

    #2

That evening, Jonah asked if Rebecca would pick up Nina Romano, Dina’s fraternal-twin sister, at the airport around 9 p. m. Nina had no idea how severe the boy’s injuries were, but based on the report that Rebecca had started CPR before paramedics arrived, she thought Max was going to survive.

    #3

The relationship between Jonah and Rebecca was unlike any he’d ever had. They shared views on exercise and nutrition, and he was a fanatic about sweets, while she was self-disciplined about sweets. Some people in his life didn’t approve of the relationship because of the age difference.

    #4

On Tuesday, Jonah returned to the hospital to see if Max’s test results had arrived. He had only slept for a few
