The Marshmallow Test is a study that was done on how people go from making a choice to delay gratification to actually managing to wait and resist the temptation.

I wanted to understand willpower, and specifically delay of gratification for the sake of future consequences. I realized that I didn’t have a clue about what went on in my daughters’ heads that allowed them to control themselves and delay gratification.

The Marshmallow Test was designed to see how children would wait for a treat. It was simple, with just a table and a desk bell, but the media dubbed it the Marshmallow Test because of the treats.

The experiment showed that Inez was able to control her impulses and wait for her treats. Blanca was able to distract herself with a silent conversation, and Javier was able to test how slowly he could move the bell without ringing it.

The same instructions were given to Roberto, a six-year-old with a beige school jacket, dark necktie, and perfectly combed hair. He quickly surveyed the cookie tray, licked his lips, and grabbed the closest treat. He meticulously cleaned it, and then returned it to the tray.
