Dedication
This book is dedicated to my parents: the late Sam West, Jr., and Clyde and Bettye Zachery. Thank you for being a great example and your unconditional love. I am a better person because of you.
This book is the result of years of journaling, prayer, study, and reflections from my leadership experiences over the last thirty years. To each minister, motivational speaker, past and present supervisors, friends, mentors, and others who I have learned from, I say, thank you. I have listened to hundreds of messages, attended seminars, and read books on a variety of topics in preparation for this body of work. Although I don’t recall all of the names, I thank and acknowledge each of you for your contributions.
Acknowledgements
I am thankful for my wife, Katriece, and resident editor, my daughter, Samaria. I am also grateful for my extended family, who serve as daily reminders of what leadership is, what should be included as part of my story, and what should be dismissed. They were the first to remind me that not everything I chew has to be swallowed. Many of their thoughts and pearls of wisdom have found their way into the story I will share with you.
To Joel Boyce, thank you for sharing your editorial talent with me. You were a Godsend.

Always Bring an Extra Pair of Shoes
A few years ago, my daughter and I took a day trip to Seattle, Washington. She has always been fascinated with the city and wanted to visit the comic book stores near the wharf. I knew we would be walking a lot, so I told her to make sure she wore comfortable shoes. She had purchased a new pair of tennis shoes and wanted to wear them. I said, Ok, but bring along another pair just in case.
Although it sounds random, I immediately thought back to a field trip I took to Six Flags as an elementary student. My grandmother had purchased me a new pair of sandals, and I was excited to wear them. She said, Wayne, there will be a lot of walking. You probably should wear your sneakers. I said,
Ok, but in my mind, I thought, She never has been to Six Flags. How would she know? I didn’t listen. I just had to show off my sandals, so I put them on. She said,
You probably should wear your tennis shoes. I said,
I want to wear my new shoes." She didn’t say anything else. She just looked at me and smiled. Off my cousin, Connie, and I went. We had our sack lunch and a few dollars to spend. What a day it was going to be!
When I opened my lunch, there were two neckbone sandwiches with hot sauce and mustard. I quickly placed the sandwiches back into the heavily greased brown paper bag because I was embarrassed. Other students had peanut butter and jelly or ham and cheese sandwiches with potato chips. Connie and I had neckbone sandwiches. Really? Who sends their child on a field trip with a neckbone sandwich? I decided I wasn’t hungry. Connie, on the other hand, opened her bag and started to eat without any embarrassment at all, I might add. When one of our classmates asked her if she had another one and wanted to trade lunches, I learned a valuable lesson. What you despise or what makes you feel ashamed is what someone else longs to have. You see, the student hated peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. When I saw what happened, I eagerly said, I have two. You can have one of mine!
We arrived in Atlanta and received our instructions for the day.
