Prologue – June 15, 1945

Papa, tell me a story before I close my eyes, Elaine Jacobs said to her father as she climbed into bed after a hard day of playing tag and building forts with her older brothers. Looking up into her father’s weary eyes that held a lifetime of stories, Elaine waited for Jonathan Jacobs to take his usual spot in the wooden chair next to her bed.

Sweet Pea, I am really tired today. I had a long day at the office and really want to get some sleep before I have to get up and do it all over again tomorrow. Also, Little One, your mother and brothers are already asleep. You should join them in dreamland. I bet Andrew and Caleb are waiting to play with you, Jonathan said to the little precocious girl who had settled herself into a comfy position. She was ready to hear a story and he had a feeling that he would not be leaving the bright yellow bedroom until he gave her what she wanted. To be completely honest with himself, he would not have it any other way. Elaine Marie Jacobs was a very special little girl and he knew that he owed all his happiness and joy to her.

Just one story. Please Papa. It can even be a quick one tonight, Elaine pleaded as she reached her little hand out for her father to hold. It had become a tradition for the pair to hold hands as Jonathan told his daughter a story to help her drift off to sleep. He knew the time would come when she would no longer be able to sleep, and he wanted to make the most of this time they had when everything was normal, and she was just a regular little girl. So, for now, he would continue to talk softly until her eyes got heavy and she finally succumbed to the slumber that she had been so desperately trying to fight off. It can be a real quick one.
