Tea For Two - E.S. McMillan

    Synopsis:

    You can’t please everyone!

To almost everyone, Ollie is a smart well-adjusted teenage girl. To her mother, there’s something very odd about the girl.

What happens when a conversation with her father gives her a glimpse into her true self?

    Prologue

Making my way down the creaky stairs of the old farmhouse that my mother inherited from her parents on their deathbed with thoughts of coffee dancing through my head, I stopped when I heard my parents already in the kitchen. Holding my breath so I wasn't heard, I listened in to their conversation. I knew that I should have announced my presence, but something told me that this conversation was important and I shouldn't interrupt. Peter, I think something is wrong with her, my mother's whiny voice hissed, causing the fine hairs on my arms to stand at attention. There was something about the woman that never sat well with me. Yes, she gave birth to me and raised me, but there was something very important missing. I questioned if she ever felt an ounce of love towards me, her only child. Every interaction that I can remember with her felt forced and unnatural; like she was only there because it was the right thing to do.

Slamming the daily paper closed, my father focused his attention on my mother. His patience with her hysterics was waning. What dear? he asked, clearly annoyed at her interruption. He treasured the peace and quiet of the morning before he started his busy day. Taking a deep breath to calm his quickly rising temper, he picked his steaming coffee mug up from the table and brought it to his lips. A slow smile spread across his lips as the steaming liquid worked its magic on his nerves.

Ollie. There is something very odd about her. I just can't put my finger on it, my mother went on, not paying any mind to my father's reaction to her statement. Pacing the length of the kitchen as she played with a loose string on her shirt, I could see the worry and fear etched on her
