    Fallen Grace - E.S. McMillan

    Prologue ~ Death

Is she really ready? I asked myself as I exhaled a deep breath. The tiredness of over one thousand years on the job crept into my old bones, and I felt every ounce of it for the first time in my life. Looking around the sparse office I had spent more time in than one could even imagine, my eyes drifted to the pictures that sat on the old hand-crafted wooden desk as I dropped my tired body onto my chair. Letting my weary head fall back, I couldn’t stop the memories of the only two loves of my life from running through my mind. I knew when the question was answered, I would lose one of them.

That question is for you to answer, a familiar voice floated into the small office, causing me to sit up at attention. I eagerly looked around for the comforting and wise face of my mentor and father to materialize in the darkness that surrounded me. Son, it’s not going to be that easy. She was young and eager to show the elders that even though she was a girl, she could do the job as well as, if not better than any man that came before her. She was ready for the task.

Then there’s your answer, my father’s voice sounded in my head.

Am I truly ready to give this all up and join you and the others? I questioned.

Looking up as the man who taught me everything I knew materialized and floated across the darkened room towards my desk, a familiar chill washed over me. The familiar scent of death flooded my nostrils, and I gripped the arms of my chair tightly. My time couldn’t have come already. There was still so much to do before I joined him and those who came before him. Relax, son. I am not here for you.

Th...th...then why are you here? I stuttered as I lifted my head and faced a version of the man who’d taught me everything I know.

A smile slowly crept across his face as he sat down in the chair across from me. I am here to warn of trouble brewing.

Trouble? I quickly asked, needing to know what
