My Bestest Friend - Gena Baxter

    Chapter 1

    First Day of School

This story takes place in the year 1998.

Hey Kianna!!!  Have you seen my blue T-shirt??!!  It was right here on my side of the closet before I went to bed last night, yells out Jazmun from the bottom of the closet.

How can you find anything in all that mess? And how do you even know it’s missing?  It could be hiding under all of that junk on the floor, Kianna says as she laughs.  No! I have not seen your T-shirt!

While Jazmun is searching in the bottom of her side of the closet, she tosses out a pair of socks, a yellow pair of shorts, and some raggedy old gym shoes. I know this T-shirt is around here somewhere.  Are you sure you haven’t seen it? Jazmun asks again.

I said no!  How many times do I have to say that? Kianna asks, while combing and braiding her hair in front of the mirror.  She is making one braid on each side of her head long enough to touch the top of her neck.  Maybe it got sucked up in the washing machine.  Kianna laughs so hard she can hardly finish braiding her hair.

You’re not funny!!  I have to find my T-shirt.  It’s my good luck charm.  If I don’t have it today, my first day at school will be a disaster!!!  You’ve got to help me find it.

Kianna continues getting ready for school, while Jazmun frantically looks for her T-shirt.  She has had that T-shirt for two years now and believes it gives her good luck every time she wears it.  Kianna doesn’t believe in that stuff.  She just laughs at Jazmun whenever she speaks of it.

Hurray!!  yells Jazmun from the closet.

Did you find it? Kianna asks.

My favorite T-shirt, Jazmun says as she stands up and hugs her shirt.  It’s been found!  Just where I left it!  Now I will have a good-luck day!

Jazmun runs by Kianna and jumps in front of the mirror admiring her T-shirt.  On the front it says, Be happy today... On the back it says, Because today is a good-luck day.  Jazmun looks at Kianna and says, Aren’t you glad I found my T-shirt?

    Why? asks Kianna.

Because now you’re off the hook, jokes Jazmun.

What do you mean I’m off the hook?  I wouldn’t even think of wearing anything of yours!  Besides, look at what a mess you’ve made on the floor.  Mom and Dad are going to be mad if they see this.

Jazmun then puts on her T-shirt and combs and brushes her hair making one long braid in the back that touches in between her shoulder blades.  She secures the end with a purple butterfly barrette. No they won’t, Jazmun says.  They hardly ever come in here.  What would they care anyway?  It’s our room.

Sitting on her bed, Kianna puts on her ankle-socks and black patent leather dress shoes
