CHAPTER ONE
AN INNOCENT PICNIC
Introducing Demone
Boy, if you don’t come on!
Moms yelled. We’re already late as it is, we were supposed to be helping ‘yo grandmother setup, now come on.!
I know but I can’t find my Nike bag
, I said tearing up my room. Which one, the duffel bag?
, she asked impatiently. No, the nylon bag. The one with make shift strings used for straps
, I said. It’s in here! Now hurry up and lock the door behind you!
she said, before slamming the car door. Climbing in the car with Moms beaming at me, I couldn’t help but wonder what was on her mind. What’s up?
I asked, putting my clothes in the bag neatly as possible? What’s with all the clothes D?
she asked, putting the car into gear. It’s a family picnic.
She looked at me knowingly as she pulled out of our apartment complex. Yeah, I know it’s a family picnic, but there’s always a little something extra at Nana’s
, I replied with a smirk. Man I hope there some fresh honeys at the picnic
I thought. I climbed over the seat and put my shoes on top of my bag.
When we pulled up at Gram’s house, the picnic was in full swing. Everyone was enjoying themselves on the two acres of green pastures where she hosted the annual family picnic. All the old folks had been congregating on the deck all day, while I had been doing a gang on, ripping and running, making plates, store runs, and playing host to all the youngins that attended grandma’s yearly affair. I wasn’t tripping though, I love my Nana, she always got my back, and, this was the one day out of the year she got to be the center of attention. So, until she said otherwise, I was at her service. Demone! Demone!
Nana called, signaling me to her. Damn, I spoke to soon. Yes Mamn!
I responded, jogging towards her. Are you tired baby?
she asked, as she wiped the sweat from my nose. Naw, I’m good, did you need something?
I asked with a little more enthusiasm than I actually had. No baby, I want you to meet someone.
she said, as we walked through the crowd of old folks. Oh hell no!
I thought. I aint trying to meet no more old folks! But, anything for Nana.
Now when they get here I want you to mind your manners and look after them. They
I thought as she broke into her pre-meeting speech, before I could dwell on it much she had the front door open and assuring the older Women that THEY were in good hands. As they walked into the house I gave them the once over and thought playing host has it’s perks and smiled to myself as Nana introduce
This is Ms. Montese, Camille and Brittney, and this is my Grandson.
Demone!
the girls screamed in unison. Ya’ll know each other?
my Nana asked, staring accusingly. I said, Now I do, but I clueless as to how these two redbones know me. I mean I done pulled some cold chicks in the lil time I been on this earth, but I ain’t never crossed they path. I would’ve remembered.
The older one Camille was a thick sista, innocently beautiful face, long thick brown hair, big breasts and thick ass legs that would make a nigga mouth water. The younger one, Brittney, I knew she was trouble from the gate. She was petite, she had gorgeous hair like her sister, nice round ass with a couple of b-cups up top. But that’s not the kicker. Her face was so angelic it was like it was crafted by God himself. Or Satan. Either way, I had to have her. After the introduction, I figured I’d play the good host and take them to the corner of the property where the youngins held down a tent of their own. Aye ya’ll this is Camille and Brittney.
Malik said cutting me off. How you know them man?
I asked clearly confused. Man fuck all the questions. We going to the festival or what?
he asked, referring to the towns annual labor day festivities. Yeah, I gotta go hit the shower though first.
I answered. As I headed back towards the house, my mind racing a million miles a minute. Wait up.
I heard an unfamiliar voice say. So naturally, I kept it movin’.
I had just turned off the water and the door open as I opened the curtain to grab my towel. The girl Brittney was standing with her back to the door. Never mind acting shocked or, turning away, she studied my body like it held the answers to an upcoming test. The least you could do is throw a brotha a towel.
I said looking from my rising manhood and into her eyes with a smirk on my face as I stepped out of the tub to grab the towel she was holding. Wrapping the towel around my waist we locked eyes and everything seemed to have slowed down as our lips were about to meet. OOPS! EXCUSE ME! SORRY!
Camille said, busting in on us as she then closed the door. Naw you good.
I said as I passed her in the hallway leaving the bathroom to get dressed. Nana’s warning rang in my ear Mind ya manners D.
Damn, I’m trying Nana
I said out loud to myself while putting on my boxers.
At the festival, I was trying my best to keep my distance from the younger chick. But, to no avail. Passing the cotton candy stand and ferris wheel as we entered the fairgrounds, I tried separating us youngins that I rolled there with. I suggested the boys and the girls go their separate ways. But of course, no one was having it. Everyone had one complaint or another. The chick Camille even had something to say and she ain’t said nothing since the bathroom incident. We decided to keep the group together and just have fun. The thing about hood kids is, their viewof fun is slightly altered. Especially being put in a predominantly white community, this may cause a problem.
It was about eight-something in the evening, and we were all getting off of the zipper
when it started. We were all laughing and clowning each other, walking toward one of the concession stands close by when a tall, country fed white boy bumped into Josiah. Oh shit!
I thought, knowing how my cousin temper could fly off the handle at the drop of a dime. Watch where the fuck you going
Josiah said, mean mugging the guy and getting all in his face. The white Boy looked like he was gonna do something stupid so I bailed the clueless mufucka out of a bad situation. His fault Bro, he wasn’t paying attention
I said guiding Josiah by the arm to our destination. Fucking right it is!
Fucking ass hole
! he retorted with a smug look on his face. Everybody always wanna try they luck with the short humble nigga. See, normally saying some shit like that would’ve gotten a nigga or a cracker in this case fucked up on site, but mom’s raised me to be a thinker and being that Nana’s warning keep ringing in my ear mind ya manners
. I’m gone let this one slide. yea alright
I replied starring at him with my mug ripped as we walked away.
As everybody ate I sat quietly, fuming with a plate of untouched food in front of me, dwelling on the fact that a white boy of all people came at me sideways. Before I knew it everybody was done eating Malik and Josiah was leading the group off towards the flying swings. I opted to stay behind, I blamed it on a headache, which was only half the truth but they bought it all the same.
As I sat there oblivious to my surroundings, using my fries to make swirls in my ketchup, I heard a female voice say here
. I looked up and staring at me like she could see into my soul, was the young chick Brittney. Here
she repeated dropping a couple of aspirins on my tray. Take these. I got them from the nurses’ station back where we came in
she said and then got up after getting no reply. Seconds later she returns with an extra-large cup of lemonade. That’s a big ass cup of lemonade
I said eyeing the drink. We can share it
she said. Questionatively, I popped the pills, took a couple of gulps and thought what the hell, all she wants is conversation. We spent about 30 minutes breaking the ice. She told me she was from Benton and that’s how she knew me and that she also had a boyfriend that, she happen to let slip, that she was sick of. I told her I lived on 23 Mile Road but, stayed in Benton with Malik and Josiah over my God Mothers’ most of the time and that I didn’t have a girl and wasn’t looking for one, although I was intrigued. As we were getting up to leave, her eyes focused on the cup in my grasp as if noticing for the first time that her cup no longer contained lemonade, she smiled and said you know you owe me a big ass cup of lemonade right?
yea I got you
I chuckled as we exited the concession area. Just then somebody bumped me and slightly pushed me all at once. My bad I said before I recognized it was the country fed loud mouth from earlier. Noticing his friends with him I knew it was gone be some shit. Not so tough now HUH?
he said pushing me for the second time and laughing with both his friends while talking shit to Brittney about me. Come on my dude I ain’t trying to start
. I said pulling up my sagging pants with my mug on. Look at em
he pointed laughing with his buddies. What you wanna do cho?
He taunted me pushing me again, Damn Nana I tried I thought before the first punch landed on his chin sending him stumbling back on his heels, while he tried to catch his balance grabbing at a picnic table, I landed another punch to the gut and another to the face, sending him to the ground in a hurry. I looked around anticipating the bum rush from his boys and then I realized one high tailing it, while Malik and Josiah using the other one as a trampoline. I kicked my victim a couple of times before calling Malik and Josiah and hightailing it myself before the Cops got there. Once we got by the Ferris wheel we slowed down to a casual stroll. Grab a girl
I said in an aggressive whisper, spotting a couple of uniform, outside the gate. Play like we on a date
, I whispered in Brittney’s ear draping my arm around her shoulders. I thought this was a date
she admitted coyly as we passed the Nurses station, Naw, a date is pre-determined, this just kinda happened
, I said into her ear as we approached the threshold of the gate. You drank my lemonade, didn’t you?
She said with so much sass that it made me chuckle as we passed the uniforms. What’s funny?
she asked pouting. You
I laughed this whole you getting mad thing is kinda cute. I looked back making sure Malik and Josiah didn’t get harassed by the uniforms. Don’t try and change the subject, she scolded with those soft, beautiful brown eyes is she capable of making an ugly face I thought as we continued to walk with my arm draped over her shoulders although the uniforms were out of site. I’m not saying I wouldn’t date you, I just, this ain’t, I couldn’t get my words together, look Ma, we’ve been having a fun time don’t go getting sour on me now, I whispered in her ear letting my lips grab her lobe.
I’m not she perked up.
So when are we? she asked.
When are we what? I asked as my Nana’s house came into view.
When are we going to meet at a predetermined time and place? She said smoothly removing my arm.
That depends on you I said, as we entered the house full of music, fun, laughter, food and bright lights. People were fixing plates for later and little kids running around everywhere. The Adults weren’t quite through partying just yet so we all went and kicked it in the garage until they were ready to disburse. Brittney and I didn’t interact much the rest of the night a few smiles and silent glances but that’s about all, but before she left she slid me a piece of paper and whispered in my ear
wait till you get home then closed my palm. The first thing I did when I got home was take a shower and dwelled on the days events. I put on some boxers and basketball shorts, I went into cleaning my room, picking up the clothes I threw on my floor earlier, when I came across the shorts I’d just stepped out of rummaging through my pockets I found Brittney’s note it read
810-999-9990 ONLY AFTER 9, CAN’T WAIT TO HEAR FROM YOU, BRITTNEY." I thought about calling, then thought against it, instead I laid out my clothes for school and wondered how this school year would differ from last year.
CHAPTER TWO
THE DAY I FELL FOR HER
It was just after five in the Evening when I finally made it in the house from football practice. I was tired as hell but it was a Friday night and ain’t no way in hell I was staying in the house. Ma is it o.k. if I go to Benton this weekend?
I asked making my way to the shower. How are you going to get there
, she asked coming towards the bathroom door? Raheem suppose to come and get me in about 20 minutes!
I yelled from behind the shower curtain. ‘So you just knew I was gonna let you go HUH? Your homework done? she questioned.
YUP I answered shutting off the water.
Come in my room before you go, she said retiring to her room. After packing my bag and getting dressed in a new Roca Wear hook-up, I did as she asked.
Hey you all dressed up what ya’ll got planned? she asked as I stopped at the foot of her queen size bed.
Nowhere really, just Skating rink,
Yea well don’t go getting in no shit and don’t go getting on yo God Mothers’ nerves, she said extending her arms for an embrace.
I won’t I said hugging her.
Here she was handing me three 20 dollar bills.
I mean it she reiterated as I took the cash.
Love you". I said.
As I was leaving her room Raheem was hitting me up on my cell. We rode with the radio on low almost the whole way to Great Skate. Raheem was on his cell trying to sweet talk his chick into staying the night with him. So imma shoot over there to get you when I leave here
, he said tapping his finger on the wheel while holding his phone to his ear with his shoulder, you betta be up, alright bet
he said hanging up the phone. Now that’s pussy talking you Niggas betta take notes
, Raheem said to Malik, Josiah and Me as he turned up Little Wayne’s Fire Man.
Lost in our own thoughts we nodded to the beat as we watched the scenery change on our way to the skating rink. Outside the rink the line was damn near around the corner, Damn
I said wishing we had gotten there earlier. I ain’t feeling this
Raheem said heading towards the front of the line cell phone in hand yea I’m out here
he paused then mouthed watch this
you know I don’t do lines
he paused again o.k. I’ll holla at you then
he said and took a few steps toward the parking lot yea o.k.
he said and hung up. What’s the deal?
I asked in suspense. just pay attention
, he nodded towards the door. A light skinned chick in a blue shirt and tan khaki’s was waiting at the door, whom started talking shit to Raheem when she said and who is this?
my lil brother’s and my Cousin they move, when I move
, walking into the building with us in tow. We walked right passed the cashier and into the loud music and festivities unfortunately we had to come out of ten dollars apiece because we didn’t have a ticket for skates but the way I saw it, I still came out on top. After checking my coat and getting my skates I joined Malik and Josiah in the lounge area where
