About this ebook

As Gabi sees her friends enjoying their summer, while she's expected to work in the family bakery, and has plans to attend Camp Ever Wood, she doesn't anticipate that her summer would turn out to be life-changing. When Gabi attends camp, girls laugh at her, she's continually called by the wrong name, bugs are dumped on her, and much more. Gabi's journey to camp is filled with embarrassing obstacles, a few unfriendly campers, and homesickness. When she reaches out to her parents for help, she's met with indifference. Her overworked parents have too much on their minds to help her.

Gabi faces some challenges such as unfriendly campers, loneliness, and embarrassing moments. These challenges all lead her to a personal relationship with God. Gabi anticipates her friend's arrival to camp, hoping that Jennifer would cure all of the hurts she feels inside. When she realizes that Jennifer cannot save her, she turns to the one who can.

    Chapter One

It was the last class for the year, and I could hardly wait for school to let out. Glancing up at the clock, I was elated to see that the bell was going to ring in twenty minutes. Just then, I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was Maya.

Hey, Gabi, she whispered. She pushed her desk closer to mine. What are you doing over the summer? Are you going on any vacations?

I checked behind me to make sure Mrs. Woods was still busy grading our last math worksheet. We were busily trying to comply with her most recent commands, sorting through old worksheets and other assorted junk, saving what we couldn’t bear to part with and happily tossing the rest into a pile. Not exactly, I whispered back. My parents will be really busy with the family bakery. They rarely get two days off in a row.

Mrs. Woods jingled her little desk bell and shouted, "Class, this whole room must be spotless before you leave!" Paper cups and plates with cake scraps from our end-of-the-year class party were everywhere. Maya and I headed over to the garbage can to toss ours away.

Tommy, the funniest boy in my class, motioned for us to come over to his desk. Hey, Gabi and Maya, he screeched. What are you both doing over the summer?

I put my pointer finger over my mouth. Quiet down, Tommy. You don’t want us getting into trouble on the last day of school, do you?

"Only you, Gabi," Tommy said, grinning.

I put my hands on my hips. Very funny, Tommy Johnson.

Tommy put his hands on his own hips to show me how silly I looked. So really, what are your plans for the summer? Did you hear about the new pool opening up tomorrow?

Yeah! said Maya, grinning and wiggling. I heard that it has three giant slides, two diving boards, and a food stand. I’ll be there.

Mrs. Woods, frowning, jabbed her finger at our seats to make us sit down again. Maya leaned in close to me. Gabi, she hissed. You still haven’t told me your plans for the summer.

I’m going to summer camp again, I said softly. "Camp starts in two weeks. The rest of the summer I’ll be helping my family in the bakery. About the pool, I probably won’t be there. My parents barely have enough help as
