C. L. King resides in Nacogdoches, which is the oldest town in Texas. He is the Pastor of Bethel Temple Church of God In Christ in Nacogdoches, Texas. King is an award winning educator. Among his honors are Teacher of the Year for Lovett Elementary School in Houston, Texas. He is also a winner of the prestigious impact II award for innovative teaching for a program called “History, Alive and in Living Color”. King has taught in Jacksonville, Texas, Longview, Tyler, and Jasper, Texas, where the story for the book originates. King is originally from Baytown, Texas, where he excelled as a student and athlete. Mr. King completed his undergraduate college study at the University of Houston and did graduate study at Texas Southern University. Mr. King is an honorably discharged U.S. Armed Forces Veteran. King has written poetry and award winning plays for church and school settings. He is currently working on a book of short stories and a novel. His goal is to have a best-selling book in children’s literature, fiction, non-fiction, and religion. He was intrigued by the Martha Adams story. He wanted to tell it for all of the children who went through the same experience but perhaps did not get the national attention or notoriety as some of the higher profile integration attempts. King wanted to tell the story through the eyes of an 11 year old, Martha Adams. King’s pen name is a tribute to his son and daughter. Jermaine is his son’s middle name and Kenyata is his daughter’s middle name. This is how he arrived at the pen name Jermaine Kenyata.

    Introduction

I think about the hundreds, perhaps thousands of black children across the country during the turbulent 1950’s and 1960’s that were in the same situation I found myself in. That situation was being the first child to integrate a school or a school system. Many of us did not receive the spectacular publicity of Linda Brown in Topeka, Kansas or Ruby Bridges in New Orleans, Louisiana. Brown’s situation came as a result of the landmark court case Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, that struck down so called separate but equal school policies. Ruby Bridges was the first black child to integrate the New Orleans school district, a large metropolitan area where she was met with a lot of resistance.

These ladies are two people I have admired down though the years because of their courage. I feel a kindred spirit with them. I want to say to all of the others who went through the same situation in big town or small town America, thank you for your efforts
