Chapter 1
Jazmine’s Birthday
Today is Jazmine’s birthday. Eric and Brenda, her parents, have asked her what she wants for her birthday, but there is nothing she can think of. This is the day that she finds that special something, and it is all she wants for her birthday.
Jazmine, rise and shine, honey, it is time to get up. We have a lot to do today to prepare for your birthday,
says Eric. It normally takes Jazmine ten to fifteen minutes to wake up in the morning, but since it is her birthday, she jumps out of bed, singing, Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me. Daddy, I am eight years old today.
Yes, you are. Today you are eight years old, and you are my little angel. Do you want to go to the store with your mom, or would you like to stay and help me around the house?
I will stay here and help you, Daddy.
Okay, get washed up and get dressed.
Jazmine rushes to the bathroom and cleans up. She puts on her new pants and her favorite pink shoes with all the glitter on them. Shuffling through her drawer, she tries to find her new shirt, but she can’t find it. Daddy, do you know where my white shirt is?
Are you talking about the one with hearts on it?
Yes.
Baby, that shirt is too new, put on something that you can get dirty.
Jazmine stands in the hallway, thinking for a minute, trying to figure out why her dad wants her to put on some old clothes on her birthday. But, Dad, it’s my birthday.
I know, Jazmine, and you will get all dressed up later, okay?
She walks slowly back into her bedroom with her head down. Pick your head up, baby, it’s okay, you will look nice for your birthday.
Oh, hello, Mama.
You are going to help your father around the house, and he doesn’t want you to get your clothes all dirty. Come, let’s get you undressed and get you into some playclothes.
I thought you were going to the store, Mama!
I am, as soon as we get you dressed.
Brenda helps Jazmine put on some playclothes and gives her a big kiss. Cheer up, it’s your birthday. Now go and help your father, and I will be back soon.
Okay, Mama,
Jazmine says with a big smile. Jazmine runs into the kitchen with Brenda close behind.
Okay, guys, I will be back around 1:00 p.m.,
says Brenda.
Okay, Mama.
Jazmine looks at her dad. What’s first, Daddy?
Well, we have to set up the tables and chairs in the backyard. There is some trash that needs to be picked up, and the barbecue grill needs to be cleaned. Where would you like to start?
I will pick up the trash, and then I will set up the tables and chairs. I don’t know if I want to clean the barbecue grill because I don’t like the smell.
That’s fine, I will clean the grill.
Jazmine takes one of the trash bags and starts to pick up the trash around the yard. As she picks up an old, weathered piece of paper, a spider crawls from underneath it.
insect_clipart_spider.tifAhhhh! Daddy, a spider,
she screams. Jazmine is terrified of bugs, but she likes to look at them, as long as they don’t touch her.
Do you want me to get the spider, Jazmine?
asks Eric.
Yes, Daddy, please?
Eric grabs an old piece of wood and picks up the spider. He walks the spider over to the fence and sets the piece of wood next to it. Jazmine stands behind Eric, holding his pant leg as she watches the spider. The spider slowly crawls off the piece of wood, through the fence, and out of sight. He is gone, Daddy, you saved the spider!
Jazmine cheers as she jumps around in joy. You’re a hero, Daddy, you saved the spider.
Jazmine grabs her trash bag and continues to pick up the trash around the yard. Eric cleans the barbecue grill and begins to set up the tables and chairs.
I’m done, Daddy, I picked up all the trash.
Good job, Jazmine. The tables and chairs are the last thing to do, and we will be finished. Mama will be home shortly, and everything will be ready for your party.
Yeah!
Jazmine yelled as she skipped in circles, waving her hands in the air. Jazmine begins to sing. Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me.
