Chapter 1
This is a story of a family living in a house where things that are very uncommon in everyday life happen. Strange and mysterious things that start out very nonchalantly. Daily things. Things that cannot be explained. Old houses have a life of their own. You decide.
To Henry
, for being truth. For Jim, for living through the truth.
My grandparents have lived on the same one-hundred-fifty-acre farm since my grandfather retired at age fifty-five. It has a big old farmhouse that they redid which my grandmother absolutely adores.
My grandparents love old houses. The house they are in now has five bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms, a dining room, a living room, a huge food pantry where her laundry room is also, and a wonderful large homey kitchen. Their basement they had redone, so it has been totally finished. They have a game room and a family room downstairs. They even have a small kitchen and a half bathroom. They also have a sewing room for my Gram.
My grandmother always says, Old houses have a life of their own.
It has two beautiful porches. The front porch is the entire width of the front and wraps around to the side door where there are steps.
The back porch is almost as big.
I am Jake. I am their oldest grandchild. I am in my final year of college this year. I am twenty-six years old, and it feels like fifty. I am going to school to be a doctor. I have shortened school as I go through the summer.
This coming January, I graduate and start my internship.
I just got my schedule for this final semester. I needed an elective and took what I think will be an easy course study: The Paranormal and Its Effects.
I think I can master this course with my eyes closed. To do that, I am reaching out to my grandmother who has had experience on this matter.
My entire life, I have heard stories from my mother about when she was little living in a haunted house. Perfect. But she couldn’t remember much since it was stories she heard my grandmother tell others. So I am reaching out to her to see if she can help me. As I call her, the phone rang. Rang and rang again. And again. And still again.
Hello,
sounds a youthful soft voice. My grandmother, Karen Barker. She hasn’t ever been soft spoken; age has softened her. She still laughs loud. I love that. She still sings Happy Birthday as loud as she can and out of tune. But that doesn’t matter to her. She always says, Sing loud and proud. God is listening. Make a joyful noise.
It made me smile to remember that.
Hi, Gram. It’s Jake.
Well, my baby boy. How are you?
That voice perked up and got a little louder.
I’m good, Grandma. How are you two doing?
Can’t complain. We are still here. Don’t want to complain about anything. Someone might take it to heart and end my early earthly life.
As she laughed. I should record that laugh. It’s so contagious. She is so full of life and it shows.
Hey, Gram. I need your help with a school project.
Cool. I haven’t been in school for quite some time, but if you need me, I will do whatever I can to help you. As long as I don’t have to study anymore.
As she started laughing.
Nope. All you have to do, if you can, is write.
I took a deep breath and continued. I am taking a course on paranormal. I would like you to write down all you know and remember about the house that was haunted.
Crossing my fingers as I spoke.
Good gravy, Jake.
Surprised at
