Weird Disciple - Trevor Levi Clowers

    Foreword

From the very first moment that I met Trevor, I knew that there was something unique and special about him. Some people may even call it weird. He had a smile and personality that filled up a room, and that wasn’t only because he was a five-foot-tall eight-year-old. Even then, I knew that he would grow up to be an amazing example of what it means to be a disciple, a true follower of Christ. Through his many years of experience in ministry, from living on the mission field to serving in the local church, Trevor has always let Christ be first in his life. I am honored to know him, not only as a leader but most of all as a friend.

Anyone who is looking for answers and direction on the life that God has for them will find help within the pages of this devotional. Trevor has put together something that is different from most devotionals you may pick up. This book is not only for you, the reader, but for the person that you pass it down to and also the person they pass it down to, and the cycle continues. Within these pages are not only devotional thoughts but testimonies of other weird disciples, testimonies of people that Trevor has known and been able to learn and grow from himself.

To everyone who may be reading this, I encourage you to dig deep into the pages, allow the Lord to speak through the words that are in front of you, hear the heart of the messages that are shared, and write out your own in response. Most of all, do not keep this to yourself; pass it along, and let’s all become weird together.

    Weird

    Adjective, weird·er, weird·est

Involving or suggesting the supernatural; unearthly or uncanny:

    A weird sound, weird lights

    Fantastic; bizarre:

    A weird getup

Archaic: concerned with or controlling fate or destiny

    Noun (Chiefly Scot), fate; destiny

    Disciple

An active adherent, as of a movement or philosophy

Often Disciple: one of the original followers of Jesus

Disciple: a member of the Disciples of Christ

But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light (1 Peter 2:9, NLT).

You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden (Matthew 5:14, NLT).

And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

    Romans 12:1–2 (NLT)

We are weird. We are not of this world. The Bible explains that we are to be in this world but not of it. We are to give our lives as a living sacrifice to the one true God. We are called out of the dark into the light for a reason, and that reason is to embrace God’s plan for us, which is to devote our lives to Him and be a light to this world. Jesus bought us at a high price. He gave His life for us, and salvation comes to whoever believes. He is the author of our destiny, and we are designed to love Him. Jesus can be the author of your story if you let Him.

    Hey, Good News!

Have you ever found out some good news from your job, doctor, or just in general? I remember one time I got my winter jacket out of storage and put my hands in my pocket and found thirty dollars. It made my day! Actually, it made my week. I love telling that story because that jacket was in storage for four years. Good news is hard to keep to ourselves. For us who believe in Christ, the best news is what He did for us.

He never sinned, nor ever deceived anyone. He did not retaliate when he was insulted, nor threaten revenge when he suffered. He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly. He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed.

    1 Peter 2:22–24 (NLT)

This is the Good News for everyone, everywhere, in every nation, and for all people groups. The Good News is that there is a way back to God through what Christ has done for us. We are no longer dead but alive in Him. We are no longer bound to sin because Christ has risen, and God made a way through Him so we can be made holy.

For the Scriptures say, You must be holy because I am holy. And remember that the heavenly Father to whom you pray has no favorites. He will judge or reward you according to what you do. Therefore, you must live in reverent fear of him during your time here as temporary residents. For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. This ransom was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but now in these last days, he has been revealed for your sake. Through Christ, you have come to trust in God. And you have placed your faith and hope in God because he raised Christ from the dead and gave Him great glory. You were cleansed from your sins when you obeyed the truth, so now you must show sincere love to each other as brothers and sisters. Love each other deeply with all your heart. For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God. As the Scriptures say, People are like grass; their beauty is like a flower in the field. The grass withers and the flower fades. But the word of the Lord remains forever. And that word is the Good News that was preached to you.

    1 Peter 1:16–25 (NLT)

There is hope, life, love, grace, and forgiveness…and that is Good News!

But to all who believed Him and accepted Him, He gave
