    - Chapter 1 -

    Time for Change

It was a dreaded drive to the interview location, a few hundred kilometres of a never-ending road. No one knew except for Lara, two of her closest friends and the people who would be part of the interview. She was ready, vibrant and had just turned thirty-two. She felt like she could rule the world. Who could have envisioned what would happen next?

Lara was up long before the break of dawn. It was a cold, wet, unfamiliar atmosphere. An unwanted, unwelcome feeling was hanging in the air. It was her first day at work and the challenges would soon start to hit one after the other. So, Lara did what she could – she took a deep breath and put her big-girl shoes on. Boy was she in over her head, as in way over. To start off with, Lara was of a different culture than the big bosses around there and they weren’t interested in anyone trying to mess with their way of doing things. Lara had to get into the swing of things or else. So, with Lara being the way she was, she did the complete opposite of that. She immediately noticed how wrong the process was and started addressing things, which definitely made many people angry. To make things worse, the very people that she was expected to lead already had their leader, or rather, boss. It was a recipe for disaster. One Lara would not be able to notice until severe damage was caused and after much suffering.

The phone started ringing. Pharmacy, hello? Lara said.

This is the personal assistant of the medical manager speaking.

Yes, Lara replied after a long pause.

Uhm, I would like to arrange a meeting with you, your supervisor and the medical manager for tomorrow, the lady on the other side of the telephone said.

Okay, Lara said, while her heart sank to the floor. This can’t be good, she thought to herself.

    Good. Thank you. Goodbye.

Goodbye, Lara replied. It was never a good meeting with these two people in one room, or even alone. Lara started thinking about every possibility that could have caused this meeting, every conversation, every possible conflict, and any mistake she could have made. Her mind was running at about a hundred miles per hour. Lara started to pray: Lord, please help me. I don’t want to meet with these people. What could it possibly be this time? Did the staff in the pharmacy complain? Maybe the clinics? What? Who? Where?

A million thoughts and questions were racing through Lara’s mind. Fear and anxiety crept in. She was already exhausted. It turned out there were conversations about Lara that happened behind her back, and she was in trouble again.

She went through a season where her self-confidence and self-worth needed to grow. Who she was at that time, decisions she made, her character, how she responded to situations and people, everything about her was questioned and criticised. Either she was too nice or too hard on people, over- or inconsiderate, too sensitive or stubborn, stupid or not listening. She was literally criticised around every corner she turned. She didn’t know what to do anymore. Whatever she would try, failed. She was just not enough.

Lara remembers a question one of her friends asked her one day.

    Lara? Queen asked.

    Yes, Queen, Lara replied.

Do you know that you deserve the best in life?

    I, uhm, I don’t know, Lara replied.

You have to know this for yourself, because no matter how much other people tell you this, you need to know it for yourself and want it.

That’s really good advice, Queen. Thank you, Lara replied.

Lara thought long and hard about the conversation with Queen. Could it be that Queen was right? Lara had given so much of herself in relationships and often came up short, gave more, understood more, supported more, wherever there was a need. Where could this come from? More importantly, how would Lara overcome this stranglehold in her life?

Lara’s dad left home when she was just five years old. Her parents divorced when she was seven. He left her with her mother and sister who hated her because of her dad’s love for her. This was where Lara’s battle began, at the young age of five.

It was a vague memory now, the day he left them. Lara could never figure out why he didn’t come back, why he didn’t stay, until much later in her life. He said that he was always cornered by Lara’s grandparents (her mom’s parents) when he and her mom had a disagreement, that he was always wrong, always outnumbered. She actually believed him for a while, felt sorry for him, until he started lying.

When her grandmother (her dad’s mom) passed away in 2017, her dad became one of her dependants. He used to depend on his mom before this.

Everything went well for a while, at least for the first two years, before he started acting up. He got involved with a girlfriend of just 27 years old. Can you believe it, a 60 year old man with a girlfriend that’s younger than Lara and her younger sister?

It soon became a roller-coaster of things going wrong.

She tried building a relationship with this man, who was supposed to be her dad, but honestly, he was a stranger to her.
