An Accidental Kiss
––––––––
Hey, look at her... what a beautiful girl!
exclaimed the receptionist to the waiter who is standing next to him in Hotel Raj Krishna.
Who?
asked the waiter.
There... that girl in the light blue dress, who is sitting alone in the chair. Look at her hazel eyes man... damn attractive. I think she would be around five feet five inches tall. What do you say?
he pointed towards the woman he was talking about.
Suddenly, a short, stout customer came to them and asked, Can you please guide me to the elevator?
Sure sir. Go straight and then take a right. You can find the elevator there,
replied the receptionist. As soon as the customer left, he turned his eyes back towards the girl and gazed for a few seconds.
Are you seeing her for the first time in this hotel?
asked the waiter.
Yes. Is she a regular customer?
No, she is not a customer. She will just sit there for hours, gazing each and every corner of this hotel and then simply leave
Why
Who knows
She might be waiting for someone
It’s been more than a month but no one accompanied her so far.
The lady looked at her watch and left the hotel immediately. The receptionist turned towards the waiter and said Let’s ask her if she visits tomorrow too
The next day Aira entered the hotel as usual and took her seat. The receptionist signed the waiter to go to her. Excuse me, ma’am, your order please,
waiter politely asked her.
Can you please wait for five minutes? I’m expecting a friend,
smiled the lady, unveiling her dimples.
Yeah, sure ma’am,
responded the waiter and left. After two minutes, someone from behind placed a hand on her shoulder and exclaimed, When did you come, Aira? So sorry for the delay.
Ten minutes back, Ramya. And it’s alright,
she smiled at her.
––––––––
Aira and Ramya were working in Dell Inc.as management trainees.
Hey, you are looking so tensed. What’s the matter?
asked Ramya, with concern.
Actually, Ramya, it’s been more than a month that I am thinking to propose a guy,
said Aira shyly.
What!? I can’t digest this. Where did you get this courage from? And you are making the first move?
It’s me who had fallen head over heels.
Unbelievable!
Ramya expressed her surprise. Are you waiting for him now?
Yes.
replied Aira with a small glint on her face.
Oh, God! I can’t believe this.
Me, too.
By the way, where is he?
I think he is inside the kitchen, cooking.
What do you mean?
asked Ramya in surprise.
He ... he is the head chef of this hotel,
said Aira.
Damn! you are in love with a chef?
––––––––
Yup
"Hmm...that’s why you called me here right. I thought you are going to throw a party for me?
Shut up! You know, every day I come here to propose him but I am unable to
By the way where did you get that guy? I mean where did you see him?
Oh! That’s a long story. I will tell you later
At least tell me what made this moron to fall for him
Aira smiled shyly and replied I really don’t know the reason for my love. It just happened
Then what are you waiting for? Go! tell him!
How?
Did you ask me how to love? Just go and reveal as you did with me
Even before she got a reply from Aira, her phone buzzed. She picked up the call and spoke into the phone, Sure, I will be there within a short time.
Our boss is calling me urgently.
Why?
––––––––
He said that there was a problem with the program that was submitted last week.
What happened?
I too don’t know. Anyway, you carryon,
said Ramya and promptly left the hotel.
Aira thought for a while, gathered courage and started walking towards the receptionist. The receptionist saw her approaching him and got tensed.
Why the hell is she coming to me? Did she listen to my comments? Does she like me?
all these questions revolved in his head, which produced sweat on his forehead.
She reached him and asked Can I meet Mr. Riaz, your head chef?
Ma’am... actually, Riaz Sir is in the kitchen. Shall I inform him about you?
It’s OK, I will wait until he is done with his work,
Aira responded and went back to her seat.
How does she know Riaz? Why does she want to meet him?
a fresh set of questions began jogging in his mind.
Aira sat quietly, cracking her knuckles and thinking deeply. It’s 9:15 PM, many customers came and left, except Aira. Finally, after four hours of a long wait, a tall guy with a short-boxed beard walked to the reception desk from the inner galley of the hotel.
Hope you had a great day, sir,
the receptionist greeted,
And oh, by the way sir, she has been waiting for you since four hours,
he said, pointing to Aira.
He was surprised on hearing that and started moving towards her. Aira raised her head slightly to see the person approaching her. Not before long, she discerned Riaz stepping towards her. The mere movement of him towards her brought a smile on her face, tension in her heart, sweat on her cheeks, trouble in her throat and many more emotions fighting to come out, but she covered them with confidence.
After reaching Aira, Riaz took an empty seat across her and said, Came to know that you have been waiting for me.
Riaz couldn’t even make an eye contact with her as she was a stranger to him. Not only Riaz, but many boys are a little uncomfortable in exchanging words during their first meet with unfamiliar women.
Yes, I have been waiting for you because... because I wanted to tell you... I love you,
said Aira looking straight into his eyes.
It shocked Riaz to hear those words from her and he was blank for a moment. He could not look at her, but soon recovered and said, Excuse me. I think you are mistaken.
No Riaz ... I know what I said, and to whom,
said Aira boldly.
Riaz felt awkward but talked anyway, May I know, how you came to know about me?
Aira smiled for a while and said, Do you remember the wedding of Karthik and Shreya?
Yes, six months ago, a destination wedding which happened in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. And I was the head chef for that,
said Riaz with a little pride.
Karthik is my brother and I have seen you at Jodhpur for the 3rd time. To be honest, I am the one who gave your information when my brother was searching for a professional chef for his wedding,
said Aira.
How did you come to know about me?
Aira smiled a bit and continued You know! Those three days while everyone was busy with the wedding, I was just staring at you, roaming around you without your knowledge
Is it? But I haven’t seen you there
You were busy in your work and I wonder how dedicated you were, in taking care of everything so perfectly
Thank you
I had seen you shouting at your staff for not smiling and telling them how little things would impact the lives of people. I really loved that.
But I am still unable to figure you out from that wedding crowd.
Aira calmly said You can’t
He couldn’t contain his amusement. So, when did you see me for the 2nd time then?
asked Riaz with excitement.
––––––––
Here,
Aira said calmly, taking a sip from the glass of water in front of her.
Here? you mean in the hotel?
asked Riaz in surprise.
Yes, we faced each other right exactly on this table.
What!? Can you please be clear? I don’t even remember meeting you, and I can’t figure out what you’re saying,
Riaz requested her in a confused tone.
Last year on April 12th. Actually, I too didn’t know that I would celebrate my birthday here in this hotel. It was a surprise party thrown by my friends. Five of us casually came here, and I knew nothing about the impending party. After talking for a while, it was around 10:00 PM, when you came to us with a chocolate cake, which was ordered by my friends . I was shocked to see you here as I had been searching for you for so many days. You were just a few feet apart from me then. You were arranging the cake on the table since the waiter was on leave. My friends started wishing me
happy birthday. but I paid them the least attention. Then you looked at me and said,
Happy birthday, Aira. Those words still echo in my mind. After that, you vanished and I couldn’t see you anywhere. That was really a magical moment for me as I was in search of you for the past 181 days.
said Aira.
I am sorry I hadn’t remembered you. It’s just that so many customers come and go, and my work is to only prepare the cake to the customized order and the rest will be taken care of by the other staff. I think that’s the first and last time I brought a cake outside the galley. What a coincidence, right!?
he paused for a moment... "So, we have seen each other and talked here for the 2nd time but I am unable to recall anything.
It’s OK. after that party, I enquired about you and came to know that you are a chef and work for Hotel Raj Krishna. Ever since, I
frequented here just to see you but you never come out of that galley. So, I took advantage of my brother’s wedding to see you once again."
Riaz was lost in the words of Aira, he was mesmerized by the way she was expressing her feelings, the way she turned the odds to get her things done, her longing to see him and be with him. He stared at her, with an undying inquisitiveness about their first meet.
Please tell me where did we meet for the first time?
We kissed each other when we met for the first time.
What the hell?! I have not even touched a girl but you are saying that I have kissed you. How is that possible?
questioned Riaz.
Actually... this happened in Goa, on January 13th. Yes, I still remember the date.
said Aira innocently.
Suddenly Riaz’s colleague, a fleshy, wheatish guy came to their table to talk to Riaz but he saw Aira and exclaimed, Ma’am I had said sorry that day itself. Please don’t make an issue now.
Aayush, do you know Aira?
asked Riaz in surprise.
Our entire gang knew her, except you.
––––––––
Oh my God! What’s happening around me? Then why didn’t you tell me about her before.
Do you think that you did a great job in Goa to discuss it again and again?
So, you know everything right!? Then why didn’t you tell me that Aira is coming to propose me?
Aayush was shocked upon hearing that and looked at Aira and said, You came here to propose him?
Yes ... did you think that I came here to complain about him?
asked Aira with a sly smile.
You idiot! Just stop it and tell me what exactly happened that day?
Riaz asked Aayush.
Get lost. I won’t tell you. Ma’am, I will tell you what had happened and why it had happened.
Hey, you can call me Aira. No need to be so formal.
"Ma’am, actually... sorry Aira, actually, we are three college friends who visited Goa—me, Riaz and our manager. From the first year
