Year 2001
Lying down Aarav was frantically dialing the number of his girlfriend but to no avail. His friends, were all sitting around him. It was a gloomy day and environment. 6 hours back at about 0600 hours, Aarav made a call, Sorry Sharmi, calling you up so early in the morning. Were you sleeping? (What a question?).
Pat came the response, No
. Going for my morning walk
. She was a health freak. Do you love me?
asked Aarav. Sharmi replies, What an abrupt question.
Aarav went quite. He was 1300 km away from her, it was a love affair that started 6 years back, and suddenly for the last few days, there was avoidance. He didn’t know how to handle avoidance. Aarav was an emotional person. He apologized and hung up. Kept walking down the dirty streets, deep in thought, when suddenly there was a thump. When he opened his eyes, he was in the hospital bed. It was an accident. He looked aside to realize his right shoulder heavily strapped with huge bruises on his face.
……… Lying down Aarav was frantically dialing the number of Sharmi but to no avail. He looked at his friends and said, Rohit can you please call up Sharmi and tell her that I have met with an accident?
. You take rest and don’t worry. I will call her up and make you speak to her.
After a lot of effort Rohit did manage to speak to Sharmi at 1815 hours. He knew her well. He with astonishment asked, Sharmi, why were you not responding to Aarav’s calls?
Before she could answer, he shot back, Anyways, that’s not important. Wanted to inform you that Aarav has met with an accident. He is in bad shape. Can you please speak with him?
No one knew what was happening. Aarav could see him from a distance. Rohit was speaking in an agitated manner. Aarav started thinking, "I hope everything is fine with Babai (That’s how he used to refer to Sharmi). Aarav’s curiosity was mounting. Every passing by second felt as if he was climbing the Everest.
Rohit walks in, gives a smile Don’t worry, she was busy. Will call you back shortly. Do you want to have a smoke
. Aarav refused. Rohit was stunned and thought out loud, You are refusing a smoke, GREAT
. Aarav was not thinking of anything else but Sharmi.
Suddenly the door opened, and the visiting doctor asked How are you feeling young man?
and got into checking the reports. You look fine, we will let you go home tomorrow.
As soon as the doctor left, Aarav looked at Rohit and asked, What did she say? Please tell me. I can bear it up.
Nothing
was the reply. Aarav begged, Please tell me. This is killing me. How busy is she, that she can’t call me up and ask about my……..
Tell him to forget me. I have nothing to do with him.
Rohit articulated exactly what Sharmi had said 3 hours back over the phone. He looked up at Aarav. His eyes were moist, but Aarav was composed. Rohit thought, I have never seen Aarav so composed. God should help my friend.
Aarav had dinner and went off to sleep. He was on heavy dosage of antibiotics. He felt drowsy.
The discharge procedure at the hospital was finally done. They were back home. Aarav, looked up to Rohit and said, Bhai, can you please get me an air ticket to Kolkata. I need to fly back home, today.
Rohit obliged and left. Aarav calls up his boss and asks for a 2 week leave. Nikhil grants him the leave.
The Journey Begins
Rohit drops him to the airport and gives him a hug. Aarav buys a cup of coffee, while taking the sip he thought, Something must have gone bad with Sharmi at work
. He was trying to tell himself everything was fine. It was sheer work pressure. While he was telling himself to relax and not think off anything negative, boarding announcement is made.
Landed at Kolkata at 2130 hours. It was raining cats and dogs. He could see nothing. Visibility was extremely low. Somehow he managed to catch hold of a cab. Nobody in his family knew that Aarav was coming down. He had even asked Rohit to not share anything with his family. He thought to himself, Is GOD trying to tell me something?
and tears rolled down his bearded face. It was the 1st sign of emotions. Was Aarav breaking down or was he thinking a bit too much.
He rings the door-bell. His mother opens the door and looked at Aarav with surprise. She couldn’t hide her emotions. He gave her a tight hug. How are you Mamma?
I am good.
Tui ekhane (How come you are in Kolkata).
Just wanted to meet you and Baba. I had 2 weeks leave, because of the injury. So thought, why not spend the time with you all
. Suddenly Yashika (Aarav’s sister) comes from behind and asks, How are you? Mamma was scared after she heard about your health.
Were you not scared?
Aarav asked? I mean we all were scared
. Aarav walks into the bedroom and hugs his father. His father was a bit surprised. Not because of the hug, but this was different.
At night when all were asleep, he went up to Aarav’s room, Champ, is everything fine?
Yes baba. Why do you ask?
You can fool your Mamma, but not me.
Tell me, what happened? Is everything okay between you and Sharmi?
I don’t know? Trying to find out.
That’s why I am here
. hmmmmm….. Go off to sleep. It would be an exhaustive day tomorrow. But it will change your life for the better
. Aarav thought, Why did Baba say such a thing? Does he know something?
But he couldn’t ask him. He was never very open with his father.
Sharmi used to stay in the bye lane just opposite to Aarav’s house. It was 0800
