    Prologue

‘Are you able to hear my voice?’ Aryan was awakened from his slumber by the question. Through the severe headache, he somehow managed to open his eyes to find a lady seated in a chair in front of him. The room was dark with a dim light radiating from the tiny bulb in the corner of the room. The lady sitting in front of Aryan had a concerned expression on her face as she repeated, ‘do you hear me?’

‘Yes I do’, Aryan replied, his voice nothing but a coarse whisper.

‘Are you feeling alright?’ she inquired.

‘Not really’, Aryan replied, ‘the headache’s killing me.’

‘Nothing to worry about Aryan. Its normal to experience headaches in such cases of prolonged therapy’, she said.

‘Prolonged therapy? I don’t remember meeting you even once’, Aryan replied, confused at the recent revelation.

‘That’s ok. Don’t stress yourself. It’s taken us a long time to get this far in your case. I will readily answer every question of yours. But you have to understand that we need to take it slow. The injury to your head might have been cured by now but the internal effects are still evident. We need to tread carefully here.’

‘What case are you referring to? What injury are you talking about? And pardon me for my language but who the hell are you in the first place?’ Aryan was visibly frustrated at the suspense as he shot back.

‘Everything will be clarified Aryan. But we have to take time and be patient. I will fill you in with all the details but before I do so, you have to promise me that you will be strong.’

‘It’s Dr Aryan’, he snapped losing his patience. ‘I am a doctor lady. And believe me when I say it, we belong to a reasonably strong breed.’

‘I agree to that.’ she replied. ‘I agree you are strong. I have been a witness to your strength during the past few months and would myself vouch for that if need be. But the same strength has to be displayed today as well.’

‘What do you mean by months?’ Aryan snapped, his fists banging the table hard, frustration evident on his face. ‘Stop talking in riddles lady! You are doing nothing but increasing the intensity of my headache. In case you are unaware of it, confusion mixed with headache is the best recipe for the worst pain.’

‘Alright Aryan, now that you are fully attentive and completely in your senses, I am Dr Sasha Sood, your psychoanalyst.’

‘Psychoanalyst? What do I need a shrink for?’ Aryan questioned.

‘You need me to make you understand a situation Aryan. And tell you a story. The story of a person who was, as you said and I quote a ‘Crazy’… in love.’

‘I have no time for your bedtime stories lady, I have to leave. I don’t know you and surely haven’t shared anything to be quoted. Plus I have a prior commitment.’

‘Commitment to meet Ilka is it?’ she asked.

‘How do you know that?’ The situation was making Aryan more and more horrified and the fact that Sasha wasn’t talking clearly was adding to it further. Firstly she spoke about months of therapy which he had no memories of and now she had revealed her knowledge about the meeting that only he and Ilka were aware of. ‘How much does this woman know?’ Aryan thought, eyes still fixated on Sasha.

‘I know a lot of things Aryan. Things you should know too. You have already fulfilled your commitment. You have already met Ilka. In fact meeting Ilka was the last thing you did before coming to us.’

‘What rubbish!’ Aryan exploded, ‘How come I don’t remember that?’

‘You might remember it once you listen to the story Aryan. A story which unfolded during our extensive sessions in the past months’, she said calmly. ‘It has already taken us a lot of time to bring you back and I suggest that we have no more time to waste. So if you wish, shall I continue?’

Aryan sat silently, looking straight in her eyes. The fact that he had no memories of meeting Ilka or the extensive sessions that Sasha mentioned was making him more and more nervous. Something was wrong, terribly wrong!!!

    Chapter 1

    ‘Love at first Sight’

Aryan looked around and took in the mesmerizing beauty of the Naddi village. At its location in a valley at the foothills of the mighty Himalayas in the Upper Dharamshala region of Himachal Pradesh, he witnessed a masterpiece of God’s creation all around. The vast stretches of green of the pine forests on the lower slopes of the Himalayas, a sight which was practically nonexistent in Mumbai was soothing to the eyes and soul alike. Right in front of him, the snow capped range of the Dhauladhar mountains stood with the contended pride of being one of the most beautiful in the whole world. He was hiding atop the usual branch of a banyan tree which stood at the corner of the path which she used to cycle her way back home every day. With a thumping heart, he was hoping again to catch a glimpse of the pretty face which had so mesmerized him from the very first time he has set his eyes on her. The innocence in those almond shaped eyes was enough to leave him bewitched for life. Her hair was always tied in a ponytail typical of a school going girl. She had the grace of an angel which made even a simple school uniform that she wore look straight out of the best of the fashion week. It had been a month and Aryan still felt the ecstasy of the moment he had seen her for the first time. As always, his thoughts once again wandered back to the day his heart skipped its beat at his first sight of her.

    One Month ago

It was just the second day and Aryan was already bored of the monotonous life in Naddi. It was the exact contrast to the fast paced, happening, event filled life in Mumbai which he was accustomed to in the recent past. After wasting a good twenty minutes surfing through the television channels, he gave up and decided to have a walk around the village. It was early evening, sundown time so Aryan decided to walk to the famous sunset point in Naddi to try and capture the much vaunted Himalayan sunset experience and to alleviate his mood. He was hungry and craved for some snacks and his customary ginger laced piping hot cup of tea. On reaching his destination after a brisk walk through the narrow dirt roads of the village, he saw a small tea stall just around the corner. Aryan sat on a dilapidated plastic chair at the stall and ordered a cup of tea along with a plate of Maggi noodles, the perfect combo to beat the chill in the air. After a couple of minutes, the owner of the tea stall arrived with a cup of steaming hot tea and placed it on the table in front of him. It took just one sip for Aryan to notice and admire the exquisitely satisfying flavor of the tea. Noticing the contended look on his face, the owner of the stall asked, ‘Like it Saheb?’

‘Yes’, Aryan replied, ‘quite different from the one we get at my place though.’

‘Has to be’, he said beaming. ‘It’s made out of tea leaves and not powder which is normally used in the cities. So which city are you from Saheb? Mumbai?’

‘Yes! The commercial capital of India as they call it’, Aryan replied smiling, ‘but how did you guess the exact city?’

‘It’s simple Saheb. First, the pace at which you walk. There is no one ahead of you and sunset is still a good 10-15 minutes away but you were briskly walking as if you wanted to reach some place real quick. Typical behavior of a person from Mumbai rushing to catch the morning local train to work. Second, the way you were clicking pictures of the simplest of things that nature has to offer here. It’s quite obvious you come from a place where nature is scarce. And finally the most obvious reason has to be your language.’

‘Language?’ Aryan asked confused, ‘I was speaking Hindi; you might be talking about the accent of speaking Hindi. However even that might be an unlikely characteristic of a Mumbaikar.’

‘No it’s not’, he said, ‘the language is the most important trait of Mumbai which separates it from the other cities.’

Still confused but extremely curious now, Aryan asked, ‘and how does my language differ
