Hatty & Barty Send Pollywoggie to Mars

Sometime ago, while jumping on their trampoline, Hatty and Barty simultaneously came up with a wonderful idea.

Why don’t we throw Pollywoggie up in the air while we jump?

Barty coaxed Pollywoggie up onto the trampoline then Hatty scooped Pollywoggie up and threw her into the air.

Pollywoggie wasn’t thrilled and started barking. Barty got up onto the trampoline and helped Hatty toss Pollywoggie higher and higher. When they got her so high they could hardly see her, something strange happened: a white cloud engulfed Pollywoggie and she disappeared.

Where did she go, Barty? Hatty queried.

I don’t know, Hatty.

Pollywoggie flying to space

They watched the cloud shimmer and turn silver.

It’s a spaceship! Hatty and Barty exclaimed. They couldn’t do anything but watch as it zoomed out of sight.

When their Dad got home from work that evening, they told him what happened and which direction the spaceship had gone with Pollywoggie. Mr. Rigglesnort didn’t believe them, buthe decided to humor them and brought them to his room to grab a shiny, tube-like object.

What is that, Daddy? Barty asked.

It is a telescope, Mr. Rigglesnort replied. With it we can see objects way out in space. In fact, we can see objects clearly all the way to Mars. Your uncle, the Professor, developed special optics that filter out atmospheric distortions and allow us to see clearly very long distances away.

Goody! said Hatty. Let’s point it in the direction of Mars and see if that’s where the spaceship went. I’ve heard there are little green men there.

Mr. Rigglesnort focused the telescope and, to Mr. Rigglesnort’s astonishment, there was a spaceship sitting on the polar cap of Mars. Running briskly outside of it was Pollywoggie. She was chasing a little green man who was running frantically away.

Look at this, children, Mr. Rigglesnort said, as he handed the telescope to Hatty. Let Barty see, too, Hatty.

Hatty looked through the telescope then handed it to Barty. Barty, how will we ever get Pollywoggie back?!

Barty commented, Three little green men just threw a net over Pollywoggie and carried her back into the spaceship. Now they are taking off.

Let me see, Hatty interjected, and she snatched the telescope out of Barty’s hands.

Give it back! Barty yelled.

A little battle ensued that Mr. Rigglesnort had to stop.

Hand me the telescope. Now, both of you sit down and stop fighting.

Hatty and Barty reluctantly complied. They sat down and looked up into the sky in time to see the spaceship shimmer and turn into what looked like a cloud.

Then, out of the sky fell Pollywoggie. She hit the trampoline with a thump and bounced high into the air. Thump! She hit again and again, finally coming to rest on the trampoline. Hatty and Barty ran out to get her.

The next day, Hatty and Barty went out to play on their trampoline. Try as they might, they couldn’t get Pollywoggie to go onto the trampoline again.

Hatty & Barty Meet Cupid on Valentine’s Day

One cold February day, Hatty and Barty remembered Valentine’s Day was almost upon them.

We need to make some valentines, Barty, Hatty said.

So they got to work. Barty got red and white construction paper and some colored pens to bring to the kitchen table. Hatty brought scissors, glue and glitter. Hatty and Barty proceeded to cut out red hearts, added white paper to them and designed various bits of prose and pictures to send to all of their friends at school.

After a lot of hard work they finished. They placed all the valentines in two little sacks to distribute at school the next day.

The next day their teacher asked everyone to distribute their valentines in an orderly manner. Naturally, all of the kids got up at once and ran to and fro squealing loudly. The mad rush finally ended when all the valentines had been passed out.

Next, their teacher passed out her cards and candy to the students. Each child received a shiny, foil-wrapped chocolate heart. In the midst of opening their chocolate hearts, the kids heard a commotion in the back of the classroom.

A little boy wearing a small white sheet stood in the back shooting arrows at the kids.

What does he think he is doing? thought Hatty and Barty in silent unison.

Barty thought fast and ran to the front of the room to grab a small chalk board. He threw it to Hatty and grabbed another for himself. Using the chalk boards as shields, they advanced towards the arrow-shooting boy. He (I’m sure you’ve guessed it by now…Cupid) was oblivious to them because he was trying to shoot the teacher. She dodged back and forth behind her desk to avoid his arrows. All of the other children had already been hit and were lying on the floor with small arrows stuck in them.

Just as Hatty and Barty reached Cupid, he shot an arrow that hit the teacher. Hatty and Barty grabbed Cupid’s bow and snatched the rest of the arrows from the quiver.

Cupid smirked, You can’t stop me! I’ve got more arrows and bows.

Maybe not, said Barty, but we’re going to try.

With that, Barty took an arrow from Hatty, placed it in the bow and fired a shot at Cupid. It was a direct hit.

Hatty and Barty See Cupid

Cupid sighed, For all eternity I’ve been providing love to the world and now I’ll get to experience it, too. His eyes wandered to the teacher. She was beginning to stir. In those days, lots of teachers had never gone to college and their teacher in particular was rather young, having just graduated from high school. As she woke up she returned Cupid’s gaze. Their eyes locked and that was it.

The next thing Hatty and Barty knew, they were attending the wedding of their teacher and Cupid. Barty was the ring bearer and Hatty lit the candles. The rest of the class wanted to get married too, but their parents wouldn’t let them.

You’re too young, their parents said. So, once again, Hatty and Barty saved the day. Only thing is, Cupid had to find a replacement. But that’s a story for another time.
